Structural Equation Modeling
Structural equation modeling (SEM) refers to a flexible and rich analytic approach that can be used to address a variety of research questions through a combination of factor analysis and path analysis. Although not (yet) widely used in applied linguistics, SEM has been applied in research to test complex hypotheses about performance levels of groups, relationships between variables, and the invariance of these relations across various groups, su…
The Influence of affective and cognitive appeals on persuasion outcomes: A cross-cultural meta-analysis
People are frequently exposed to different extents of affective and cognitive appeals, but it remains unclear whether appeals targeting emotions or beliefs are differentially effective across cultures. Hence, this meta-analysis investigates the relative influence of affective versus cognitive appeals for persuasion outcomes as a function of individualism-collectivism. Using 133 samples across 22 countries (N = 29,338), we found affective appeals …
Flexibility in coping deployment and psychological adjustment during Covid-19: A three-level meta-analysis across 33 countries
Findings highlight the mental health benefits of coping flexibility amid the pandemic, but its role varies by contextual health-related stressors. The moderating effect of adjustment valence suggests dual pathways in which coping flexibility relates to positive versus negative mental health criteria. Practical implications are drawn for the design of targeted interventions to foster flexible coping with future health outbreaks

Statistical Inference in Redundancy Analysis: A Direct Covariance Structure Modeling Approach
Redundancy analysis (RA) is a multivariate method that maximizes the mean variance of a set of criterion variables explained by a small number of redundancy variates (i.e., linear combinations of a set of predictor variables). However, two challenges exist in RA. First, inferential information for the RA estimates might not be readily available. Second, the existing methods addressing the dimensionality problem in RA are limited for various reaso…
Revisiting the integration hypothesis again: High heterogeneity complicates the interpretation of cross-sectional evidence
A recent meta-analytical paper (Bierwiaczonek & Kunst, 2021) sparked a controversy by demonstrating that cross-sectional associations between acculturation preferences and adaptation are weak and heterogenous, and approach zero when assessed over time. Some responses criticized the paper by arguing that small but robust effects can make a real-life difference if applied to millions of migrants. In this paper, we present additional analyses to ill…
Examining Second Language Listening and Metacognitive Awareness: A Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling Approach
Second language (L2) listening comprehension is a function of many variables. We focused on metacognitive awareness, which we measured using the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ; Vandergrift et al., 2006), and meta-analyzed (a) the factor structure of the MALQ and (b) the relationship between metacognitive awareness and L2 listening comprehension. We used meta-analytic structural equation modeling to synthesize 29 studies tha…
Perceived behavioral control moderating effects in the theory of planned behavior: A meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE: According to the theory of planned behavior, individuals are more likely to act on their behavioral intentions, and report intentions aligned with their attitudes and subjective norm, when their perceived behavioral control (PBC) is high. We tested these predictions meta-analytically by estimating the moderating effect of PBC on the attitude-intention, subjective norm-intention, and the intention-behavior relations in studies applying …
Bilingual language experience and children's social-emotional and behavioral skills: A cross-sectional study of Singapore preschoolers
The current study examines the relationship between bilingual children's dual language experience (i.e. language input, language output and vocabulary proficiency), and their social-emotional and behavioral skills. Data were analysed from 805 Singaporean bilingual preschoolers (ages 4; 1–5; 8 years), who are learning English and either Mandarin (n = 551), Malay (n = 105), or Tamil, (n = 149). A parent questionnaire and standardized vocabulary tes…
Meta-analytic structural equation modeling with moderating effects on SEM parameters.
Meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) is an increasingly popular meta-analytic technique that combines the strengths of meta-analysis and structural equation modeling. MASEM facilitates the evaluation of complete theoretical models (e.g., path models or factor analytic models), accounts for sampling covariance between effect sizes, and provides measures of overall fit of the hypothesized model on meta-analytic data. We propose a nove…
An achievement test for Chinese preschool children: Validity and social correlates
Early childhood is a crucial period for human development that has long-term implications for one’s life trajectories. During the years before formal schooling, brain size and structures, as well as cognitive abilities, undergo rapid development. Children’s cognitive abilities develop by leaps and bounds and show great malleability. Cognitive development during early childhood exerts a long-lasting influence on children’s life chances in adulthoo…

Four Covariance Structure Models for Canonical Correlation Analysis: A Cosan Modeling Approach
The mathematical connection between canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and covariance structure analysis was first discussed through the Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes (MIMIC) approach. However, the MIMIC approach has several technical and practical challenges. To address these challenges, a comprehensive COSAN modeling approach is proposed. Specifically, we define four COSAN-CCA models to correspond with four possible combinations of …
Assessing Replicability of Machine Learning Results: An Introduction to Methods on Predictive Accuracy in Social Sciences
Machine learning methods have become very popular in diverse fields due to their focus on predictive accuracy, but little work has been conducted on how to assess the replicability of their findings. We introduce and adapt replication methods advocated in psychology to the aims and procedural needs of machine learning research. In Study 1, we illustrate these methods with the use of an empirical data set, assessing the replication success of a pr…
Accounting for Missing Correlation Coefficients in Fixed-Effects Masem
Meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) is increasingly applied to advance theories by synthesizing existing findings. MASEM essentially consists of two stages. In Stage 1, a pooled correlation matrix is estimated based on the reported correlation coefficients in the individual studies. In Stage 2, a structural model (such as a path model) is fitted to explain the pooled correlations. Frequently, the individual studies do not provide a…
Explaining Differences in Subjective Well‐Being Across 33 Nations Using Multilevel Models: Universal Personality, Cultural Relativity, and National Income
This multinational study simultaneously tested three prominent hypotheses—universal disposition, cultural relativity, and livability—that explained differences in subjective well‐being across nations. We performed multilevel structural equation modeling to examine the hypothesized relationships at both individual and cultural levels in 33 nations. Participants were 6,753 university students (2,215 men; 4,403 women; 135 did not specify), and the a…
Meta‐Analysis: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
Presents a novel approach to conducting meta-analysis using structural equation modeling. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and meta-analysis are two powerful statistical methods in the educational, social, behavioral, and medical sciences. They are often treated as two unrelated topics in the literature. This book presents a unified framework on analyzing meta-analytic data within the SEM framework, and illustrates how to conduct meta-analysis …
MetaSEM: An R package for meta-analysis using structural equation modeling
The metaSEM package provides functions to conduct univariate, multivariate, and three-level meta-analyses using a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach via the OpenMx package in the R statistical platform. It also implements the two-stage SEM approach to conducting fixed- and random-effects meta-analytic SEM on correlation or covariance matrices. This paper briefly outlines the theories and their implementations. It provides a summary on ho…
Modeling dependent effect sizes with three-level meta-analyses: A structural equation modeling approach.
Meta-analysis is an indispensable tool used to synthesize research findings in the social, educational, medical, management, and behavioral sciences. Most meta-analytic models assume independence among effect sizes. However, effect sizes can be dependent for various reasons. For example, studies might report multiple effect sizes on the same construct, and effect sizes reported by participants from the same cultural group are likely to be more si…
Sociocultural Differences in Self-Construal and Subjective Well-Being: A Test of Four Cultural Models
In this study, the authors tested four cultural models-independence, interdependence, conflict, and integration-that describe the hypothesized relationships between dimensions of self-construal and components of subjective well-being among individualistic and collectivistic countries. Collectivistic countries that have undergone rapid socioeconomic changes (i.e., East Asian countries) and those with limited changes (i.e., African countries) were …
Outlier and influence diagnostics for meta-analysis
The presence of outliers and influential cases may affect the validity and robustness of the conclusions from a meta-analysis. While researchers generally agree that it is necessary to examine outlier and influential case diagnostics when conducting a meta-analysis, limited studies have addressed how to obtain such diagnostic measures in the context of a meta-analysis. The present paper extends standard diagnostic procedures developed for linear …
A Study of Sexual Satisfaction and Frequency of Sex Among Hong Kong Chinese Couples
There have been several studies in Western societies on the causes and consequences of sexual satisfaction within marriage. Little is known, however about the marital sexual relationship in Chinese societies. Moreover, most published studies used married individuals rather than married couples as participants. The present study examined data from a well-established knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) survey of 1,124 Hong Kong Chinese couples …
Recovering Preipsative Information From Additive Ipsatized Data: A Factor Score Approach
Response bias has long been recognized as an issue in the behavioral and social sciences, especially in cross-cultural research. Transforming raw data into ipsatized data, individual scores subject to a constant sum constraint, is proposed to be an effective measure to minimize response bias. One major problem of applying ipsatized data is that scores are incomparable across individuals. By assuming that the ipsatized data are transformed from a …
Evaluating Multilevel Models in Cross-Cultural Research: An Illustration With Social Axioms
To assess how culture influences the behavior of people, multilevel models are an immediate choice for modeling the relationship at the levels of the individual and culture. The authors propose structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the universality of psychological processes at the individual and culture levels. Specifically, the structural equivalence of the measurement (where the instrument is measuring the same construct across countries)…
Meta-analytic structural equation modeling: A two-stage approach.
To synthesize studies that use structural equation modeling (SEM), researchers usually use Pearson correlations (univariate r), Fisher z scores (univariate z), or generalized least squares (GLS) to combine the correlation matrices. The pooled correlation matrix is then analyzed by the use of SEM. Questionable inferences may occur for these ad hoc procedures. A 2-stage structural equation modeling (TSSEM) method is proposed to incorporate meta-ana…

Classifying Correlation Matrices Into Relatively Homogeneous Subgroups: A Cluster Analytic Approach
Researchers are becoming interested in combining meta-analytic techniques and structural equation modeling to test theoretical models from a pool of studies. Most existing procedures are based on the assumption that all correlation matrices are homogeneous. Few studies have addressed what the next step should be when studies being analyzed are heterogeneous and the search for moderator variables for homogeneous subgroup analysis fails. Cluster an…
Psychological Responses to Outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome: A Prospective, Multiple Time‐Point Study
This study examined anxiety and coping responses to the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong. Trait anxiety, situation‐specific coping strategies, and coping flexibility were proposed as predictors of state anxiety during the early phase of the SARS epidemic. Seven‐two Hong Kong undergraduates (31 men, 41 women) participated in a prospective, multiple time‐point study. Participants' trait anxiety and coping flexibilit…
Cognitive Processes Underlying Coping Flexibility: Differentiation and Integration
This study investigates how individuals formulate flexible coping strategies across situations by proposing differentiation and integration as two stress‐appraisal processes. Results showed that participants who coped more flexibly adopted the dimensions of controllability and impact in differentiating among different stressful situations. They also deployed an integrated strategy: the deployment of more monitoring in situations perceived as cont…
