  • Integration of standing column wells in urban context

Open Access•Vincent Laroche, Philippe Pasquier et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2022

  • Respire

Kivanç Tatar, Mirjana Prpa et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo Music Journal•2019

Respire is an immersive art piece that brings together three components: an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment, embodied interaction (via a breathing sensor) and a musical agent system to generate unique experiences of augmented breathing. The breathing sensor controls the user’s vertical elevation of the point of view under and over the virtual ocean. The frequency and patterns of breathing data guide the arousal of the musical agent, an…

  • A framework for computer-assisted sound design systems supported by modelling affective and perceptual properties of soundscape

Miles Thorogood, Jianyu Fan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2019

Autonomously generating artificial soundscapes for video games, virtual reality, and sound art presents several non-trivial challenges. We outline a system called Audio Metaphor that is built upon the notion that sound design for soundscape compositions is emotionally informed. We first define the problem space of generating soundscape compositions referencing the sound design and soundscape literature. Next, we survey the state-of-the-art sounds…

  • Musical agents

Kivanç Tatar, Philippe Pasquier•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 68

Musical agents are artificial agents that tackle musical creative tasks, partially or completely. This review of musical agents combines the terminology of Generative Arts (artistic practice) and the scientific literature of Computational Creativity, Multi-Agent Systems (MAS), and Artificial Intelligence. We define Musical Metacreation as a field that studies the partial or complete automation of musical tasks. We survey seventy-eight musical age…

  • Automatic Synthesizer Preset Generation with PresetGen

Kivanç Tatar, Kıvanç Tatar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 15

We refer the task of finding preset(s) (i.e. set(s) of synthesizer parameters) that approximates a target sound best, as the preset generation problem. PresetGen addresses this problem regarding the real world synthesizer, OP-1. The OP-1 consists of several synthesis blocks, and it is not fully deterministic. We propose and evaluate a solution to preset generation using a multi-objective Non-dominated Sorting-Genetic-Algorithm-II. PresetGen handl…

  • Context Machines

Benjamin David Robert Bogart, Philippe Pasquier•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2013•References: 3

The authors discuss the development of self-organizing artworks. Context Machines are a family of site-specific, conceptual and generative artworks that capture photographic images from their environment in the construction of creative compositions. Resurfacing produces interactive temporal landscapes from images captured over time. Memory Association Machine's free-associative process, modeled after Gabora's theory of creativity, traverses a sel…

  • Auditory Tactics

    Philippe-Aubert Gauthier, Philippe Pasquier•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2010

The term “auditory tactics” refers to the contextual listening attitudes and competencies adapted to various private and public auditory contexts, spheres and aural architectures. Auditory Tactics, created for the Pure-Data Convention 2007 in Montréal, is a spatial sound installation designed to interfere and play with the auditory tactics of passersby in a public space by projecting sounds from more private spheres. The novelty of the authors' w…
