  • Ethnic Identity of the Indigenous Tribes in Great Nicobar Island

    Open Access•Rajesh Patnaik, B V Ravi Prasad•ARTICLE•Studies of Tribes and Tribals•2009

The present paper is aimed at understanding the indigenous tribes of the Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It focuses on the geographical distribution of resources and the retention of strong ethnic differentiation among the islanders. The utilisation of the non-over lapping resources leads to more or less specific utilisation of microenvironments within the Great Nicobar Island. The extensive utilisation of resources large…

  • Detailed mtDNA genotypes permit a reassessment of the settlement and population structure of the Andaman Islands

    Open Access•Subihra Sankar Barik, R Sahani et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 49

The population genetics of the Indian subcontinent is central to understanding early human prehistory due to its strategic location on the proposed corridor of human movement from Africa to Australia during the late Pleistocene. Previous genetic research using mtDNA has emphasized the relative isolation of the late Pleistocene colonizers, and the physically isolated Andaman Island populations of Island South‐East Asia remain the source of claims …

  • Built Environment in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands: A Tradition on the Brink of Disappearance

    Open Access•Rajesh Patnaik, B V Ravi Prasad•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2005•Cited by: 1

The tranquil panorama of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is undergoing a drastic change from the pointof view of 'built environment'. The town of Port Blair had been built mainly with the locally available resources, which gives it a unique tradition of built environment as well as a pattern of utilizing the local resources optimally. Inrecent years, drastic changes are occurring in the construction of buildings. There is a shift from traditional wood…

  • Anthropometric Variation and Population Structure of The Nicobarese Islanders

    Open Access•B V Ravi Prasad, B Bhaskara Rao et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2004

The close resemblance of geographically and linguistically separated Niocobarese within Nicobar Islands had drawn attention of cultural anthropologists, physical anthropologists and linguistics. Studies conducted so far revealed that the Nicobarese are heterogeneous and the differences are mainly due to geographical isolation of Nicobar Islands and bio-type. The R-matrix which estimate the minimum degree of genetic divergence shows that the Nicob…

  • Mitochondrial DNA Variation in Nicobarese Islanders

    B V Ravi Prasad, Chris E Ricker et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2001•Cited by: 5

The aboriginal populations living in the Nicobar Islands are hypothesized to be descendants of people who were part of early human dispersals into Southeast Asia. However, analyses of ethnographic histories, languages, morphometric data, and protein polymorphisms have not yet resolved which worldwide populations are most closely related to the Nicobarese. Thus, to explore the origins and affinities of the Nicobar Islanders, we analyzed mitochondr…

  • Multiple origins of the mtDNA 9-bp deletion in populations of South India

Open Access•W Scott Watkins, M Bamshad et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1999

The origins and genetic affinities of the more than 500 tribal populations living in South Asia are widely disputed. This may reflect differential contributions that continental populations have made to tribal groups in South Asia. We assayed for the presence of the intergenic COII/tRNALys 9-bp deletion in human mtDNA in 646 individuals from 12 caste and 14 tribal populations of South India and compared them to individuals from Africa, Europe, an…

  • Nutritional Status of The Nicobarese Tribal Children of Harminder Bay, Little Andaman

    Open Access•Madhumala Chattopadhyay, B V Ravi Prasad•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1995

The present study throws light on nutritional status of 104 Nicobarese tribal children of Harminder Bay. Little Andaman. Age-independent indices derived from anthropometric measurements such at height, chest girth, mid-upper firm girth and body weight rental that boys in all age groups have ‘poor’ or “weak” or ‘very weak’ body build and are categorised under ‘distinctly low’ or ‘mild undernutrition. However, girls in the age-group of 11-13 years …

  • Fertility and Reproductive Performance of Aramadravida Brahmins of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•B V Ravi Prasad, B R Busi•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•1993

The present paper reports demographic and reproductive aspects of Aramadravida Brahmins of Andhra Pradesh. They trace their origin from 'Brahacharanam Brahmins' of Tamilnadu, who later on amalgamated in 'Vaidild Brahmins' of Andhra Pradesh. The sex ratio on the whole, indicates an excess of male over female. The mean age at marriage for boys and girls are 21.69 ± 0.5 and 15.00 ±0.4 years, respectively. The mean menarcheal ago is 13.98t 0.99 while…
