  • Dissecting Child Penalties

    Open Access•Pierre Pora, Lionel Wilner•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2025•References: 43

The authors relate mothers' children-related labor earnings losses, referred to here as child penalties, to their location in the distribution of potential hourly wages. Using French administrative data and based on an event study approach, the authors show that the magnitude of these earnings losses decreases steeply along that distribution. This heterogeneity is the result of low-wage mothers leaving the labor market and more frequently reducin…

  • Citizens’ attitude towards subnational borders

    Open Access•Lionel Wilner•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2022•References: 6

Using the 2016 merger of French regions as a natural experiment, this paper adopts a difference-in-differences identification strategy to recover its causal impact on individual subjective well-being. No depressing effect is found in the short term; life satisfaction has even increased in regions that were absorbed from both economic and political viewpoints. The empirical evidence at stake suggests that local economic performance has enhanced in…

  • The individual dynamics of wage income in France during the crisis

    Open Access•Pierre Pora, Lionel Wilner•ARTICLE•Economie et Statistique /…•2017•References: 4

The uncertain nature of future income limits the ability of agents to smooth their consumption over time. Variation in this uncertainty can thus bring about variation in well-being. We study the evolutions of the uncertainty on wage income in France before and over the course of the crisis of 2008 drawing on longitudinal administrative data. Using a non-parametric method, we estimate the magnitude and form of this uncertainty and show that they d…

    Patrick Sillard, Lionel Wilner•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2015
