  • Language Ideologies

    Catherine R Rhodes•CHAPTER•2023

Language ideologies are a mediating device that helps people make sense of the relationship between linguistic and other communicative patterns and socially salient categories. Language ideologies are used to evaluate socially perceivable behavior as meaningful with respect to issues of power, authority, and difference. They can be understood as a framework for linking certain uses of language (or other communicative forms) with certain social po…

  • Making language ‘academic’

    Catherine R Rhodes, Katherine Clonan‐Roy et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Education•2021

We argue that 'academic language' should not be understood as technical components associated with a 'register', and that instead we must attend to its enregisterment. Enregisterment relies upon language ideologies and models of personhood, requiring attention to social components of 'academic language' beyond lexico-grammar. We draw on ethnographic data from Latina girls in a US middle school to show how adolescence presents a unique ontogenetic…

  • Citation

    Open Access•Catherine R Rhodes•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2020

Citation is a reflexive, semiotic practice that is dependent upon local ethno‐metapragmatics. The centrality of reflexivity is explored through an analysis of power relations involved in citational practice. An argument is made for viewing citation as praxis and, thus, for reflexively calibrating our own disciplinary citation practices

  • Dually Authenticated and Doubly Modern

    Open Access•Catherine R Rhodes•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 48

Linguistic purist ideologies circulate widely on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. Yucatec Maya speakers differentiate a 'pure," "authentic" Maya located in the past from a "mixed," "corrupted" Maya located in the present. Today, the ideologically "pure," "authentic" Maya of the past, jach maaya, is gaining a new center of authenticity in the present through its increasing institutionalization. This project is doubly modern in its temporal rupture…

  • The production of relevant scales

    Wortham, Catherine R Rhodes•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics Review•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 8

This essay explores the question of relevant scale: which of the many potentially relevant processes - from interactional through local through global, from nearly instantaneous through those emergent over months, years or centuries - in fact contributes to social identification in any given case, and how do these heterogeneous processes interrelate? Contemporary answers to this question have moved beyond the détente of the "micro-macro dialectic…
