Mapping Turin’s Urban Topography in Elena Ferrante’s The Days of Abandonment
Much1 attention has been paid to Naples as the setting of Elena Ferrante’s novels. But her tetralogy My Brilliant Friend (L’amica geniale 2011–2014) features a narrative frame set in the city of Turin. Turin is also the topographic background of her second novel, The Days of Abandonment (I giorni dell’abbandono, 2002; translated in English in 2005). Introduction
Margherita
argherita was tiny and hunched. She had light eyes, and always—summer or winter—wore a shawl she kept closed on her chest with her hand, as if clutching a necklace. She lived in a small place under the low porticoes of the city hall, a place that seemed the lair of a wood fairy. Гоголь жил в Риме с перерывами между 1837 и 1848 годами, и в Риме он написал некоторые из наиболее значительных своих произведений. Отрывок “Рим” (1842)—единственное художественное доказател…
Mothers, Daughters, Dolls
This article suggests disgust as a framework for approaching the novels of contemporary Italian writer Elena Ferrante. More specifically, it proposes disgust as the operative trope of Ferrante’s figurations of daughterhood, motherhood, and the (pregnant) female body. Ferrante’s novel, La figlia oscura (2006) narrates the experiences of motherhood and femininity through its middle-aged protagonist’s obsession with a young mother, her daughter, and…
Reading Games/Games of Reading
Iurii Trifonov (1925-1981) was a successful Soviet writer and sports journalist. He did not belong to samizdat print culture. But like other officially published Soviet literature, his works enacted an Aesopian game of hide-and-seek with the censor and the reader, whereby meaning was concealed throughout the text and marked by subtle hints. In this essay, I explore the implications of game playing as elaborated in Trifonov's most subversive, thou…
