Jews for Sale?
The world has recently learned of Oskar Schindler's efforts to save the lives of Jewish workers in his factory in Poland by bribing Nazi officials. Not as well known, however, are many other equally dramatic attempts to negotiate with the Nazis for the release of Jews in exchange for money, goods, or political benefits. In this riveting book, a leading Holocaust scholar examines these attempts, describing the cast of characters, the motives of th…

Changes in the Relationship Between Child Support Payments and Educational Attainment of Offspring, 1979–1988
We examine changes over the 1980s in the effect of child support payments on the educational attainment of children age 16 to 19 in the United States, and why child support has a stronger impact than other sources of income. We use 1979 and 1988 Current Population Survey data, covering a period when improvements in enforcement should have increased the proportion of reluctant fathers paying support. We hypothesize and find that the positive effec…

The Divisions of Labor by Gender
This commentary on the articles by Julie Brines and Robert Fiorentine focuses on the human capital aspects of their treatment of the gender divisions of labor. Although Brines's article presents some interesting empirical work, it does not appear to be an accurate representation of Becker's theory on the gender division of labor between the home and the market. Fiorentine succeeds in clearly summarizing and contrasting economic and sociological t…
Part-Time Work and Child Care Choices for Mothers of Preschool Children
The AA. examine joint choices of level of employment and child care arrangement using a sample of mothers of preschool children from the National Survey of Families and Households. Including part-time employment in the choice model is important because nearly 40 % of mothers of preschool children combine employment and caregiving by working part-time. Results suggest a unique combination of factors affecting the choice of part-time employment com…
Black-White Earnings Over the 1970s and 1980s
This paper uses CPS data to analyze gender differences in black-white annual earnings trends over the 1970s and 1980s. We find that in at least two respects black women fared better than men over this period. First, due to decreasing relative annual time inputs for black males, but not black females, black women experienced increases in both annual earnings and estimated wages compared to white women, while black men gained only in terms of wages…

Child Support and Remarriage
This article examines the relationship between two determinants of economic well-being for divorced mothers, child support and remarriage. Using a nationally representative sample of non-Black, ever-divorced mothers eligible for child support from the 1979, 1982, 1984, and 1986 March/April match file of the Current Population Survey, we predict the probability of remarriage using four measures of child support awarded and received while controlli…

Educational attainment of children from single-parent families
This article examines the effect of living in a single-parent family on educational attainment by gender and race. According to household production theory, the reduction in parental resources for human capital investment in children living in a single-parent family should lower their educational attainment. Using matched mother-daughter and mother-son samples from the National Longitudinal Surveys, we constructed precise measures of the age and …
The Economic Emergence of Women
Trends in Earnings Differentials by Gender, 1971-1981
Using data from the Current Population Surveys, the authors examine earnings differentials by gender for 1971 and 1981. Most observers, focusing on the median annual earnings of year-round, full-time workers, have concluded that the earnings differential did not change over that decade. Using a different method to adjust for gender differences in hours and weeks worked, the authors find, on the contrary, that the female-male earnings ratio signif…
Child support awards
This paper examines differentials in the award of child support by race and marital status and evaluates the impact of the child support enforcement program, begun in 1975, on child support awards. According to data from the 1979 and 1982 March/ April Match Files of the Current Population Survey, never-married mothers are significantly less likely than ever-married mothers to have a child support award; which do, however, cannot readily be explai…
