A Robust Approach to Heteroscedasticity, Error Serial Correlation and Slope Heterogeneity in Linear Models with Interactive Effects for Large Panel Data
In this article, we propose a robust approach against heteroscedasticity, error serial correlation and slope heterogeneity in linear models with interactive effects for large panel data. First, consistency and asymptotic normality of the pooled iterated principal component (IPC) estimator for random coefficient and homogeneous slope models are established. Then, we prove the asymptotic validity of the associated Wald test for slope parameter rest…
The Tageh Sing Ritual of the Kensiw, Kedah, Malaysia
The religious tradition of the Malaysian Orang Asli is closely associated with ritual singing, dances and shamanistic seances during which curing ceremonies are performed. Geoffrey Benjamin first noted the regional differentiation in this traditional practice between the east and the west Orang Asli. In the west, among the Kensiw people of Kedah, however, another genre of religious practice that does not entail shamanistic seances has been common…
Cəmam or Sexual Prohibition among the Kensiw of Kedah, Malaysia
Kinship-related prohibitions such as the “in-law” avoidance are a defining feature of the nomadic foraging way of life of the Semang, northern Aslian speakers of peninsular Malaysia. With the stress of the recent Islamic assimilation policy and the changing base of subsistence, however, some Kensiw, a Semang group in Kedah, are feeling that the rules against cəmam or “improper sexual behaviour between relatives” may be contrary to the maintenance…
Subgroup 'names' of the Sakai (Thailand) and the Semang (Malaysia): A Literature Survey
After a long interruption due to the Pacific War and Malayan Emergency, anthropological research on the foraging populations of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia was resumed with renewed vigor by Thai, Malaysian, and international scholars. However, the link between recent findings and those reported by earlier workers in the region is often not made explicit. One difficulty in constructing a clear linkage is the lack of unambiguous identit…
The Orang Asli of West Malaysia: An Update
In 1989, Geoffrey Benjamin published an overview of studies on the indigenous peoples of West Malaysia. Over a decade later, the feeling that a wide-ranging update might be useful has provided the stimulus for this note. Although many worthy reports on the Orang Asli have appeared since 1989, some of which we refer to here, we focus our attention mainly on the following new books: Semelai Communities at Tasek Bera: a Study of the Structure of an …

On the Limits of Symbolic Interpretation in Anthropology [and Comments and Reply]
Symbolic readings of ritual acts rely on a distinction between the symbolic and the instrumental that is hard to sustain. In order that we take public lectures and academic papers-which are certainly ritual acts-intellectually seriously, it is enough that they not be obviously false. A further argument against reading them symbolically is that the symbolic reading involves projection of hidden meanings which have not been intentionally put there.…

Concepts and Methods for the Secondary Analysis of Variations in Family Structures [and Comments and Replies]
Primary data on the family have been collected over a long period of time and inmany parts of the world through social surveys in which the study of the family may or may not have been an objective. Secondary analysis of these data can produce useful information on cross-cultural and longitudinal variations in family structures. In particular, the combinated data will be plentiful enough to permit detailed categorization, which may not have been …
