Primary data on the family have been collected over a long period of time and inmany parts of the world through social surveys in which the study of the family may or may not have been an objective. Secondary analysis of these data can produce useful information on cross-cultural and longitudinal variations in family structures. In particular, the combinated data will be plentiful enough to permit detailed categorization, which may not have been feasible in the case of the corresponding primary analyses. The process of secondary analysis requires certain conceptual considerations and methodological aids. These are discussed in this paper with special reference to the categorization of family structures in the dimensions of their kinship composition and intra-family kinship distances
