Structure, Ideology, and Tribal Governments
The sovereign-cum-trusteeship status of Native American groups is under increasingly strident attack by federal, state, and local non-native interests. Huge revenues of several native-operated casinos have fueled the move even as they have increased the political leverage of some native groups. To counter this threat, tribal governments need both stability and effectiveness. Stability might well come from reform of native governance structures to…
The Boys from Rockville: Civil War Narratives of Sgt. Benjamin Hirst, Company D, 14th Connecticut Volunteers
The 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was formed in August 1862 and less than a month later its men were engaged in the fierce fighting at Bloody Lane during the battle of Antietam. This book presents an articulate, firsthand view of camp life and combat in the 14th, as told by Sgt. Benjamin Hirst of Company D, a unit composed largely of men from the mill town of Rockville. Hirst's wartime narratives consist of letters and journal entries writt…

The Predicament of the Native American Leader: A Second Look
The Quechan tribe has continued its governmental functions and an active quest for federal monies despite pervasive factional conflict. Conventional wisdom declares leadership instability is incompatible with tribal economic development. This case challenges that wisdom, and suggests that under specified conditions conflict can help narrow the ideal-real gap between leaders' performance and voters' expectations

Changes in Yuma Social Organization
The following report is based on field work among the Quechan, or Yuma Indians, living on the Fort Yuma Reservation on the lower Colorado River. Crosscurrents along the Colorado: The Impact of Government Policy on the Quechan Indians
When in 1893 the Quechan Indians of Fort Yuma, California, gave up tracts of fertile farmland in the Colorado River basin in return for Federal aid, they hardly could have anticipated the ensuing deterioration of their economic, political, and cultural self-determination. Their circumstances devolved as has often been the case with Federal Indian policy. This intriguing book, original published in 1981, considers the Quechans as a case history of…
