Geochemical Characteristics of the Raw Materials and Moulding Compounds of Neolithic Net-Impressed Ceramics from Central Siberia
Introduction. This study investigates the chemical composition of Neolithic net-impressed ceramics from Central Siberia using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis. The primary objective is to characterize the raw materials and moulding compounds employed by hunter-gatherer communities in the region. Materials and Research Methods. The sample set comprises 147 ceramic specimens from 11 archaeological sites: eight located in Yakutia and thre…
Potential of Multivariate Statistical Methods for Interpreting Portable X-ray Fluorescence Analysis Data from Ceramics
The results of portable X-ray fluorescence analysis (pXRF) of Middle Neolithic ceramics (53 vessels) of Baikal-Yenisei Siberia from excavations at the Ust-Belaya, Derevnya Martynova, Indon, Popovskii Lug, and Generalov sites are presented. It is established that multivariate statistical methods, particularly principal component analysis and cluster analysis, offer the best opportunities for interpreting pXRF data. These methods reduce data dimens…
Variability of the Chemical Composition of Early Neolithic Ceramic Vessels of the Tunka Valley According to Portable X-ray Fluorescence Analysis
This article presents the results of portable X-ray fluorescence analysis (pXRF) conducted on a collection of Early Neolithic ceramics (~8.5–7 ka cal BP) from the Tunka Valley (Southwestern Baikal region). The sample includes 20 vessel fragments from excavations at the Tuyana and Elovka-Nugan 1 sites, located on opposite banks of the Irkut River, 6 km apart. Measurements were carried out using an Olympus Vanta M portable analyzer on sections of t…
Dynamics of Neolithic Cultures of Baikal-Yenisei Siberia in the Context of the Stone Age of Northern Asia and Neighboring Territories
Based on a comparative analysis of data from Northern Asia and parts of East Asia, the article discusses issues of the spread of hunter-gatherers and cultural dynamics in the Neolithic of Baikal-Yenisei Siberia (~8.6–5 ka cal BP), which at that time found itself literally “at the crossroads of the worlds”. According to the authors’ hypothesis, the settlement of Baikal-Yenisei Siberia in the Early Neolithic, starting from ~8.6 ka cal BP, came main…

The results of X-ray fluorescence analysis using a portable spectrometer (pXRF) are presented, carried out on a collection of stone aeolian-corraded artifacts from the Melkhitui 2 and Bilchir 4 sites, which are located in the OsaUnga wide section of the Bratsk Reservoir. The aim of the study was to determine a suitable geochemical indicator for identifying blocks of raw materials and groups of rocks similar in composition that were used in lithic…
Middle Neolithic Burials in Baikal-Yenisey Siberia
Burials of the Geoarchaeological Site Ust-Keul 1 (Northern Angara Region)
This paper presents results of a study of two burial complexes from the geoarchaeological site Ust-Keul 1 in Northern Angara region (excavations of 2012). Mortuary rites and grave goods were analyzed, thus making clear the issue of cultural affiliation of these complexes and defining their uniqueness for the Baikal-Yenisei Siberia. The burials were made by a method of inhumation in ground graves. In both cases structures above and within the grav…
Middle Neolithic Burials in Baikal-Yenisey Siberia
The study focuses on the analysis of Middle Neolithic burial complexes of the Baikal-Yenisey Siberia. Based on a series of reliable radiocarbon dates, their age lies within the range of 6190–5900 cal BP. It partly corresponds to the end of the hiatus in the mortuary traditions of Cis-Baikal. Features of the burial rite and funerary offerings are analyzed and compared with those of neighboring territories. One of the most frequent images in the ar…
Some Results of Technological and Morphological Analysis of the Middle Neolithic Pottery from the Southwestern Lake Baikal Coast (Based on Materials of the Pad Dolgaya 2 Site)
This article presents the results of a technical and morphological analysis of Middle Neolithic pottery from the multilayered site Pad Dolgaya 2 that located on the southwestern coast of Lake Baikal. The pottery collection includes 574 fragments from at least 13 vessels. It has been established that the raw material for all the pottery of the layer was heavily sandy, ferruginous clay with a natural admixture of sand and fine quartz. The compositi…
Problems of Cultural and Chronological Identification of the Ust-Ilir Burial Ground (Southern Angara Region)
The search for the Middle Neolithic burial complexes in Baikal-Yenisei Siberia is one of the most important fields of modern regional research. It is directly related to the problem of the so-called hiatus, which is characterized by the absence of dated burials for several hundred years between the Early and Late Neolithic in the range of ~7–5.5 ka cal BP (or ~6.6–6 ka cal BP to updated data). We see the greatest prospects at this stage of resear…
Chronology of the Neolithic Ceramics of Baikal-Yenisei Siberia
There are two main research areas in the Neolithic studies of the Baikal-Yenisei Siberia. One of them relates to research of mortuary traditions, another with a research of hunter-gatherer’s campsites. Ceramics is of the greatest importance for the cultural identification of campsites complexes. As a result of the Canadian-Russian project, for the Neolithic burials a clear chronological model based on AMS radiocarbon dates corrected for the fresh…
