Politics and Institutions in Capetian France
The nine essays in this volume by Elizabeth Brown deal with the development of representative institutions and monarchial power in Capetian France. One topic covered is that of the evolution of central assemblies, with case studies of the assemblies held between 1316 and 1321 illuminating the impact of theory on practice. A second topic is that of the moral implications of fiscality and of the attempts by French monarchs to regulate their policie…
Suger and the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis, 1144–51
This paper examines the nature and extent of Abbot Suger’s work on the church of Saint-Denis during the last seven years of his twenty-nine-year-long abbacy (1122–51), topics that have occasioned scholarly disagreement, largely because of Suger’s statements in his Ordinatio (1140–41), De consecratione (1144), and Gesta (1144–49). Close reading of these texts suggests that Suger never professed to have finished the western towers (or even one of t…
Jeanne d'Évreux: Ses testaments et leur exécution
During the forty-three years of her widowhood, Jeanne d’Évreux (d. 1371), the third wife of Charles IV (1294 – 1328), devised and implemented novel testamentary strategies that influenced other members of the royal family and a number of leading royal officials at the end of the fourteenth and beginning of the fifteenth centuries. Beginning in 1339, and perhaps inspired by the example of her great-aunt Mahaut of Artois (1285 – 1311), Jeanne began…
Moral Imperatives and Conundrums of Conscience: Reflections on Philip the Fair of France
When I was asked to propose a topic for my presidential address, the subject I chose, moral imperatives and conundrums of conscience, seemed to me particularly appropriate and timely. This was in part because of the problems of conscience caused for many members of the Academy by the decision to hold the annual meeting in Arizona, whose restrictive laws on immigration seemed to many to violate basic principles of right and justice and hence to wa…
Memoirs of Fellows and Corresponding Fellows of the Medieval Academy of America: Robert-Henri Bautier
Robert-Henri Bautier was one of France's leading and most respected medieval historians, dedicated to preserving and enhancing the traditions of textual and documentary study that have flourished in France since the seventeenth century. He died at Paris on 19 October 2010 after a long and courageous struggle with illness, supported by his devoted wife and lifelong colleague Anne-Marie until her death in 2008, and to the end by his daughter Genevi…

Images du pouvoir royal: Les chartes decorees des Archives nationales, XIIIe-XVe siecle
In 1884, describing three heliographic facsimiles of portions of illustrated French charters, E. Dupont regretfully acknowledged that the images ‘n’offrent qu’une idée imparfaite des sujets dont ils sont censés fournir une copie fidèle’. How Dupont would have admired and wondered at Images du pouvoir royal, superbly produced and reasonably priced, the product of Ghislain Brunel's diligent sleuthing and probing reflections. Conservator in the Sect…

Medieval Futures: Attitudes to the Future in the Middle Ages
The Trojan Origins of the French: The Commencement of a Myth’s Demise, 1450–1520
Between 1560 and 1580, the idea that the French were direct descendants of those fleeing Troy after its destruction suffered one resounding scholarly blow after another.1 By the end of the century serious and responsible writers of history both popular and scholarly had virtually completely rejected the myth.2 Since the seventh century when, from vague and unsubstantial beginnings, the story was given vital form and compelling narrative shape, th…
Printed Commonplace Books and the Structuring of Renaissance Thought
This is the first comprehensive study of the Renaissance commonplace-book. Commonplace-books were the information-organizers of Early Modern Europe, notebooks of quotations methodically arranged for easy retrieval. From their first introduction to the rudiments of Latin to the specialized studies of leisure reading of their later years, the pupils of humanist schools were trained to use commonplace-books, which formed an immensely important eleme…
Sir Philip Sidney and the Circulation of Manuscripts, 1558-1640
This is the first modern study of the production and circulation of manuscripts during the English Renaissance. The book examines the relationship between manuscript and print, looks at people who lived by their pens, and surveys authorial and scribal manuscripts, paying particular attention to the copying of verse, plays, and scholarly works by hand. It investigates the professional production of manuscripts for sale by scribes such as Ralph Cra…
