In 1884, describing three heliographic facsimiles of portions of illustrated French charters, E. Dupont regretfully acknowledged that the images ‘n’offrent qu’une idée imparfaite des sujets dont ils sont censés fournir une copie fidèle’. How Dupont would have admired and wondered at Images du pouvoir royal, superbly produced and reasonably priced, the product of Ghislain Brunel's diligent sleuthing and probing reflections. Conservator in the Section ancienne of the Archives nationales in Paris, Brunel presents magnificent colour photographs and useful analyses of forty decorated charters in the J, K, and M series of the Archives nationales, dated from November 1283 to January 1416. Thirty-four are royal acts (including one of King Robert II Stuart of Scotland [1316–90, r. 1371–90] and one, in duplicate, of Queen Blanche of Navarre [1330–98]); one is a grant made in 1357 by Philippe, duke of Orléans (1336–75); four are ecclesiastical acts; one is a notarial
