Clubs and events: Two models of performance in studies of sport and national solidarity
This study distinguishes between two performances of solidarity—a performer–audience structure and a network structure—illustrated through a review of two case studies from the field of sport: a cross‐national survey of football fans and a historical study of French cycling clubs. Research on nationhood, sport and performance has centred mainly on public events and how they generate focused attention to foster mass solidarity. Scholars have overl…
Introduction to themed section on mechanisms of national solidarity
This introduction to the themed section on ‘Mechanisms of National Solidarity’ explores key questions and challenges related to studying national solidarity as distinct from national identity. Focusing on the ‘how’ rather than the ‘what’, this section highlights the importance of examining and theorising the social mechanisms that shape different manifestations of national solidarity. These mechanisms include interpersonal interactions, social ne…
From Yeshiva Students to Breadwinners: Liminality and Concealment Among Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Men in Israel
This article examines shifting masculinities among young ultra-Orthodox Jewish men in Israel who have left yeshiva (religious seminary) to pursue higher education with the ultimate goal of employment. Based on semi-structured interviews with 30 ultra-Orthodox men, we identify academic studies as a transitional stage during which they 'trade' the masculinity of religious student for that of (future) breadwinner. We show how the binary structuring …
Performing Identity or Performing Relationships? Rethinking Performance Theory in Social Media Studies
Much of the discussion of performance and collective action presupposes a hierarchical performer-audience structure along the lines of Durkheimian public events intended to reaffirm a collective identity. Scholars have generally overlooked an alternative, horizontal formulation of 'performance of relationships' in which viewers serve as a third party to the social exchange. While such a performance is central to social media interactions, most st…
When a Club Turns into a Public Event: The Structural Transformation of the British Parliament and the Making of Collective Solidarity
Masculinity ideologies, sensitivity to masculinity threats, and fathers’ involvement in housework and childcare among U.S. employed fathers
Distinguishing solidarity from identity in studies of nationhood: An alternative to the civic–ethnic dichotomy
This article argues for an analytic distinction between questions of collective identity and questions of solidarity in studies of nationhood. Whereas the former inquiry centres on group classifications and commonalities, the latter examines cooperation and patterns of interaction among group members. Although theoretical discussion of national solidarity is sparse, three central approaches in the field can be highlighted: understanding solidarit…
Imagining national solidarity: Strangers-turned-friends-turned-brothers
There is limited cultural analysis of the tropes and metaphors underlying the discourse of national solidarity. This article revisits three central approaches to bounded solidarity and connects them with distinctive tropes of personal relationships: solidarity-through-sameness encapsulated in the family metaphor; solidarity as an impersonal relationship between strangers; and solidarity as an extension of sociability encapsulated in the friendshi…
Consumer masculinity ideology: Conceptualization and initial findings on men’s emerging body concerns
Men's body concerns have been increasing in recent decades, as contemporary men express what had almost exclusively been feminine concerns over body appearance. Although traditional masculinity can account for some body concerns, it cannot fully explain their increased prevalence or changing forms. This project examines recent shifts from a production-centered to a consumerist culture, and suggests that this societal change manifests in the emerg…
Social club sociability as a model for national solidarity
Outsmarting the Nation, Together: Subversive Virtual Fraternity in the Israeli Men's Magazine Blazer
This article examines the reconstruction of a virtual Israeli male fraternity in Israel's only men's lifestyle magazine, Blazer. Modeled after the global 'new lad' magazine format, the Blazer text engages its readers by forging a homosocial joking relationship. Focusing on a satire dedicated to Israel's Independence Day, this study delineates a series of parodic discursive practices employed by the narrators to deconstruct and appropriate traditi…
