Perceptions, Contagion, and Civil Unrest
This paper investigates the impact of citizens' perceptions of economic and political conditions on nonviolent uprisings. For a global sample of high‐income (Europe) and developing economies (Sub‐Saharan Africa, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East and North Africa), on average, negative perceptions of political conditions have a significant positive effect on the number of anti‐government protests and general str…
Data transparency and growth in developing economies during and after the global financial crisis
The study explores the effects of data transparency on economic growth for developing economies over a unique time period ‐ at the onset of the 2007–2009 global financial crisis and thereafter. Data transparency is defined as the timely production of credible statistics as measured by the statistical capacity indicator. The paper finds that data transparency has a positive effect on real gross domestic product per capita during a period of consid…
A New State of Mind
The MENA region is facing important vulnerabilities, which the current crises—first the pandemic, then the war in Ukraine—have exacerbated. Prices of food and energy are higher, hurting the most vulnerable, and rising interest rates from the global tightening of monetary policy are making debt service more burdensome. Part I explores some of the resulting vulnerabilities for MENA. MENA countries are facing diverging paths for future growth. Oil E…
Data Transparency and Long-Run Growth
For centuries states have engaged in collecting data to \nserve various interests. In modern times, a data gap has \nemerged between developing and developed economies, \nwith the latter having more advanced data systems. The \nauthors explore the effects of data transparency on longrun \ngrowth for a sample of mostly developing economies. \nData transparency is defined as the timely production of \ncredible statistics as measured by the Statisti…

Inequality and Economic Growth
This paper estimates a panel model in which the relationship between inequality and gross domestic product per capita growth depends on countries' initial incomes. Estimates of the model show that the relationship between inequality and gross domestic product per capita growth is significantly decreasing in countries' initial incomes. The results from instrumental variables regressions show that in low-income countries, transitional growth is boo…

The Rise of the Middle Class and Economic Growth in Asean
This paper presents estimates of the relationship between the share of income accruing to the middle class and gross domestic product per capita of economies from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The increase in gross domestic product per capita that these economies experienced during 1970–2010 significantly contributed to a higher share of income accruing to the middle class. The impact of the rise of the middle class on economic grow…
Export promotion and firm entry into and survival in export markets
Surveys of export promotion agencies suggest that that they tend to focus on helping firms become exporters as a means to stimulate aggregate export growth, but the existing empirical evidence has paid little attention to the role of export promotion agencies in helping entry into exporting. This paper fills this gap with a panel of exporting and nonexporting firms from seven Latin American countries during the period 2006–2010. The results sugge…
Trade Openness and Economic Growth
This paper uses an instrumental variables approach to estimate the relationship between trade openness and economic growth in Sub‐Saharan Africa. Instrumental variables estimates show that economic growth has a significant negative contemporaneous effect on trade openness, while trade openness has a significant positive effect on economic growth. A 1 percentage point increase in the ratio of trade over GDP is associated with a short‐run increase …

Accountability and Corruption
This study uses a cross-country panel to examine the determinants of corruption, paying particular attention to political institutions that increase accountability. Even though the theoretical literature has stressed the importance of political institutions in determining corruption, the empirical literature is relatively scarce. Our results confirm the role of political institutions in determining the prevalence of corruption. Democracies, parli…
Income, Wealth, and Socialization in Argentina
Lederman focuses on two objectives in his study: (1) to establish a baseline measurement of the level and geographic distribution of social capital in Argentina, and (2) to identify its empirical determinants. The study's survey questionnaire provides individual-level data on the population's participation in social organizations and willingness to trust members of its community. Probit models are estimated to explain the individual's decision to…
Inequality and Violent Crime
In this article we take an empirical cross-country perspective to investigate the robustness and causality of the link between income inequality and crime rates. First, we study the correlation between the Gini index and, respectively, homicide and robbery rates along different dimensions of the data (within and between countries). Second, we examine the inequality-crime link when other potential crime determinants are controlled for. Third, we c…

Accountability and Corruption
The results of a cross-country empirical analysis suggests that political institutions are extremely important in determining the prevalence of corruption: democracy, parliamentary systems, political stability, and freedom of the press are all associated with lower corruption

Old and new trade policies
Latin American development strategies have historically been inextricably linked with trade theory and policy. The author’s main argument is that the old infant industry and the new strategic trade arguments are fundamentally similar. Among their similarities is the justification of selective protection of certain economic sectors. Among their differences, the infant industry argument justifies temporary protection, while the argument in favour o…
