The Problem with Empathy: A Reply to Martin Jay
Gaza: We need to talk
Nuraan DavidsStellenbosch UniversityI don’t think we need to wait for history to tell us what we already know about Gaza. No amount of legal debates on the plausibility of its genocide status, can
Against Exceptionalism
In this article, I question the logic informing paradigms of trauma that ontologize and essentialize events, such as the Holocaust and chattel slavery, making them unique, incomparable exceptions that encapsulate or inaugurate the violence of Western modernity, while standing outside and above the order they found. In an effort to avoid the urge to rank that follows almost effortlessly from such ontologization, I mobilize the appeal to the univer…
Solidarity and the Palestinian Cause: Indigeneity, Blackness, and the Promise of Universality
Zahi Zalloua provides the first examination of Palestinian identity from the perspective of Indigeneity and Critical Black Studies. Examining the Palestinian question through the lens of settler colonialism and Indigeneity, this timely book warns against the liberal approach to Palestinian Indigeneity, which reinforces cultural domination, and urgently argues for the universal nature of the Palestinian struggle
Understanding Barthes, Understanding Modernism
Understanding Barthes, Understanding Modernism is a general assessment of the modern literary and philosophical contributions of Roland Barthes. The first part of the volume focuses on work published prior to his death in 1980 covering the major periods of his development from Writing Degree Zero (1953) to Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography (1980). The second part focuses both on the posthumously published material and the legacies of his …
Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future
Posthumanism is both a descriptive and a prescriptive term. Firstly, it registers a shift beginning in the late 1960s and epitomized by Foucault’s “the death of Man”. Secondly, it refers to the future and a new relationship with the non-human, along with a different understanding of human exceptionalism. In Being Posthuman: Ontologies of the Future, Zahi Zalloua interrogates this future and shows that “post-” does not necessarily mean ‘after’ or …
Universal Politics
This book claims that there is a negativity at the core of all social articulations that provides the basis for a universal politics. Drawing principally on the work of Slavoj Žižek, the book suggests that the social is punctured by an impossibility—an incompletion—that, rather than serving as a barrier to politics, lays a foundation for shared struggle. The book thus argues for a negative universality, rooted not in a positive element (e.g., ide…
Theory’s Autoimmunity: Skepticism, Literature, and Philosophy
Continental Philosophy and the Palestinian Question: Beyond the Jew and the Greek
From Sartre to Levinas, continental philosophers have looked to the example of the Jew as the paradigmatic object of and model for ethical inquiry. Levinas, for example, powerfully dedicates his 1974 book Otherwise than Being to the victims of the Holocaust, and turns attention to the state of philosophy after Auschwitz. Such an ethics radically challenges prior notions of autonomy and comprehension two key ideas for traditional ethical theory an…

Torture: Power, Democracy, and the Human Body
The counterterrorism policies following September 11, 2001, brought the definition and legitimacy of torture to the forefront of political, military, and public debates. This timely volume explores the question of torture through multiple lenses by situating it within systems of belief, social networks of power, and ideological worldviews. Individual essays examine the boundaries of what is deemed legitimate political violence for the sake of sta…
Derek Attridge on the Ethical Debates in Literary Studies
Derek Attridge on the Ethical Debates in Literary Studies Zahi Zalloua (bio) The following is an interview with Derek Attridge, whose The Singularity of Literature (2004) has helped to reframe the ethical debates in literary studies in a highly innovative manner. This exchange took place via email, August-September 2008. Zahi Zalloua: Emmanuel Levinas’s influence has been quite significant in the last 15 years, fueling the (poststructuralist) eth…
Alain Robbe-Grillet's La Jalousie: Realism and the Ethics of Reading
Alain Robbe-Grillet's La Jalousie:Realism and the Ethics of Reading Zahi Zalloua (bio) Published in 1957, as the nouveau roman was rising on the Parisian literary scene, Alain Robbe-Grillet's novel La Jalousie [Jealousy] produced in many of its first readers a reaction of puzzlement and consternation. One critic from the newspaper Le Monde believed that "he had surely received a copy whose pages had been mixed up by the printer, that it was a jum…

Figuration: Emmanuel Levinas and the Image
The problem that concerns us here is figuration. Not the image, and not art, even though, of course, these themes are not unrelated to the arguments that follow. My initial hypothesis is that our current understanding of all these phenomena would benefit from our adopting a new perspective, from our yielding neither to an aesthetic line of inquiry, full of preconceptions about the beautiful, the work, and its meaning, nor to the more recent promo…

Foucault, Subjectivity, and Identity: Historical Constructions of Subject and Self
