Fair Games—Curating New Music
The authors of “Defragmentation: Curating Contemporary Music,” a special issue of the Darmstädter Beiträge zur Neuen Musik published in 2019, considered all aspects of any given artistic event as fair game for curation. They suggested that not only could the choice of pieces, soloists, conductors, and ensembles be (re)tooled (including even site-specific aspects), but the roles of the musicians and audience and even value regimes could be instrum…
The Power of Vulnerability: Art in the Digital Woke Age
Let us try to assume our fundamental ambiguity: On the Art of Getting Beyond Identity Politics
Inspired by Antonio Gramsci, sociologist Pascal Gielen defines the last decade as one of 'organic crisis'. In such periods many (economic, political, ecological) crisis follow each other while the hegemonic order cannot deal with them anymore in a convincing way, and a new political paradigm that can sufficiently deal with them is not yet invented. In such a period the oppositions between left and right, between different ethnic groups, or betwee…
The creative industries: Conflict or collaboration? An analysis of the perspectives from which policymakers, art organizations and creative organizations in the creative industries are acting
This paper compares and contrasts the instruments and values formulated in the creative industries policies of three peripheral municipalities of between 150,000 and 220,000 inhabitants in the Netherlands (Groningen, Arnhem and Eindhoven) with the needs of the creative industries itself. The needs of the creative industries have been empirically researched by conducting an online survey (n = 556) and twelve in-depth interviews with professionals …
The road to sustainable creativity: Mobile Autonomy Beyond Auto-Mobility
How can artists stay autonomous, and keep their creativity alive in the contemporary society? In this paper is stated that the individual bourgeois model of the artist is not sufficient any more to make autonomous art and to stay creative on the long run. If artists want to stay mobile and autonomous they need to build collective organizational structures, which are called 'traveling caravan'. In the parallel historical shifts between 1970 and 20…
Artistic Praxis and the Neoliberalization of the Educational Space
Referring to the work of Richard Sennett, this article puts forth the proposition that art production is possible only when there is a correct relation between theory and artistic practice. An effective artistic praxis can only be realized by incorporating theory in artistic practices. Based on empirical research, the author elaborates on the biotope, which is the necessary precondition for a sustainable development of art. This biotope consists …
The Art Institution in a Globalizing World
How do “classical” big art institutions (museums, the ballet, the opera, symphony orchestras) react to phenomena of globalization such as migration flows, the “denationalization” of artistic movements, the enormous growth of the number of artists, the trend of a global cultural branding of cities, etc.? And which cultural policies do governments develop to interfere in the relationship between those art institutions and their changing environment…
Art and Social Value Regimes
How are artistic choices made and what arguments play a part in this process? In this article selection mechanisms were analysed by means of mainly qualitative research methods, such as participant observation in artistic institutions and governmental bodies, in-depth interviews with policy-makers and decision-makers, research in the records and analyses of documents. Artistic selections were compared for two fields of research in Flanders (the D…
Museumchronotopics: On the representation of the past in museums
Many visitor studies make social background variables the central point of departure to explain participation patterns. How the past is ‘staged’, however, also has an influence on those to whom it appeals. This relational perspective calls for new conceptual tools to grasp empirical reality. Inspired by the historical philosophy of Georg Simmel and the literary theory of Mikhail Bakhtin a number of concepts which enable us to grasp the subtle rel…
