  • Stepfather-stepchild Relationship Quality: The Stepfather's Demand for Conformity and the Biological Father's Involvement

    Open Access•William L Macdonald, A Demaris•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2002•Cited by: 13•References: 17

Using data from the National Survey of Families and Households, the authors investigate how a stepfather's demand for conformity from a stepchild influences stepfather-stepchild relationship quality. Drawing from normative resource theory as well as from Coleman's theory of social capital, the authors consider whether the effect depends on the social capital that the stepchild derives from his or her relationship with the biological father. The a…

  • The Difference between Blacks' and Whites' Attitudes toward Voluntary Euthanasia

    William L Macdonald•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1998•Cited by: 5

Researchers have consistently found that blacks are more opposed to legalizing voluntary euthanasia than are whites. Although sketchy and untested, theories for this race difference attribute it either to a difference between the two groups' levels of fundamentalism, or to a difference between the two groups' levels of fear regarding of giving others the power to end one's life. Data from the General Social Survey (GSS) and the Ohio Death and Dyi…

  • Parenting Stepchildren and Biological Children: The Effects of Stepparent's Gender and New Biological Children

    Open Access•William L Macdonald, A Demaris•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•1996•Cited by: 18•References: 26

Evolutionary views suggest that stepparents find it more difficult to parent stepchildren than to parent biological children. However, gender stratification perspectives suggest that stepmothers are more likely than are stepfathers to experience role conflict in acting as both a stepparent and a biological parent. Therefore, especially when new biological children are added to the stepfamily, stepmothers, more often than stepfathers, may experien…

  • Remarriage, Stepchildren, and Marital Conflict: Challenges to the Incomplete Institutionalization Hypothesis

    William L Macdonald, A Demaris•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1995•Cited by: 6

According to Cherlin (1978), the degree to which the family is varies across family types in the United States. Families are institutionalized to the extent that well-established norms and rituals structure interaction between family members. Cherlin's (1978) hypothesis posits that stepfamilies are relatively lacking in the kinds of norms that guide more traditional (i.e., two-parent biological) families in dealing with particularly complex famil…

  • Idionecrophanies: The Social Construction of Perceived Contact with the Dead

    William L Macdonald•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1992•Cited by: 2

Instances in which persons believe they are in with the dead occur quite frequently, but sociological research into these events has been minimal. In this analysis, a logistic regression model was developed to predict the odds of experiencing what has been called contact with the dead, post-death contact, and for the purpose of this research, an idionecrophany. The study examines how gender, race, and religious imagery influence the social constr…
