Friend loss exacerbates adjustment difficulties among shy children
The current study tested the hypothesis that friend loss amplifies longitudinal associations from shyness to adjustment difficulties. Participants were 533 (245 girls, 288 boys) 4th- to 7th-grade students (ages 9–14 years) attending public schools in Lithuania. Self-reports of shyness, victimization and emotional problems, and peer nominated acceptance were measured at the beginning and middle of the same school year, approximately 13 weeks apart…
Unveiling the impact
Taken together, our findings confirm that there is a difference in frequency of dissociative experiences between those who experienced CSA and those who did not. Findings of the present study would suggest that different types of CSA should not be joined into one, since there may be important differences between them. A Cross-National Study on Prosocial Behaviors in Emerging Adulthood During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Emerging adulthood is marked by changes and exploration of life directions and is significantly impacted by crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-national study examined the psychological, relational, and contextual factors associated with prosocial behaviors— adherence to COVID-19 measures and helping strangers—among emerging adults (ages 18–25) from 14 countries during the pandemic. We assessed empathy, social identification with those …
The Correlates and Consequences of Friendship Change and Friendlessness During Late Childhood and Early Adolescence
The present study is designed to identify the consequences of losing friends, gaining friends, and being friendless. Participants were public primary and middle school students (ages 8–14 years, M ag e = 11.35, SD age = 1.41) in Florida and Lithuania (481 boys). Participants completed friend and peer reputation nominations twice during an academic year (fall and spring semesters), with friendships defined by reciprocated nominations. Six friend c…

Perceptions of relationship quality that predict friendship dissolution during childhood and adolescence
The present study examines perceptions of relationship quality as antecedents of best friendship dissolution. Participants included 230 students in Florida (United States; 54.3% girls; ages = 8-13; 39.6% European American, 27.0% Hispanic American, 21.7% African American, and 2.6% Asian American) and 496 students in Lithuania (49.0% girls; ages = 8-14; 358 boys; nearly all ethnic Lithuanian) attending public schools in Florida (United States) and …
Gendered Self-Views Across 62 Countries
Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countrie…
The Perils of Not Being Attractive or Athletic
Emerging adults’ cultural values, prosocial behaviors, and mental health in 14 countries during the Covid-19 pandemic
Evidence suggests an impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, particularly among emerging adults. However, theories on altruism born of suffering or adversarial growth suggest that we might also see prosocial behavior as a function of the pandemic, which may protect against mental health challenges. Because cultural values are central in determining prosocial behavior, the current study explored how cultural values were differentially as…
Effects of individual differences, society, and culture on youth‐rated problems and strengths in 38 societies
BACKGROUND: Clinicians increasingly serve youths from societal/cultural backgrounds different from their own. This raises questions about how to interpret what such youths report. Rescorla et al. (2019, European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 28, 1107) found that much more variance in 72,493 parents' ratings of their offspring's mental health problems was accounted for by individual differences than by societal or cultural differences. Although p…
“My Words Matter”
A substantial body of research provides evidence for the role of parents in transferring pro-environmental attitudes, values, and behaviors to their children. However, little research has focused on children’s active attempts to influence parents’ pro-environmental behavior. In a survey involving 508 Lithuanian families, we examined the bidirectional influences of parents’ and adolescents’ information-induced proenvironmental intentions and behav…
Psychometric Properties and Correlates of Precarious Manhood Beliefs in 62 Nations
Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data …

Toward Reducing Adolescents’ Bottled Water Purchasing
Policy awareness increases the likelihood of policy-congruent behavior. Yet individuals may differ in the extent to which they notice certain policies; thus, psychological factors that explain behavior can have a differing effect on policy-congruent behavior of individuals. We investigated to what extent the relationship between normative, habitual, intentional, and situational factors that explain bottled water purchasing behavior vary regarding…
Country‐level and individual‐level predictors of men's support for gender equality in 42 countries
Men sometimes withdraw support for gender equality movements when their higher gender status is threatened. Here, we expand the focus of this phenomenon by examining it cross‐culturally, to test if both individual‐ and country‐level variables predict men's collective action intentions to support gender equality. We tested a model in which men's zero‐sum beliefs about gender predict reduced collective action intentions via an increase in hostile s…
Objective and subjective markers of transition to adulthood in emerging adults
The purpose of this study was to investigate the direct and indirect (via objective and subjective markers of adulthood) relations of parental trust and emerging adults' life satisfaction in samples of Lithuanian ( N = 399, ages 18-25) and Japanese ( N = 585, ages 18-25) emerging adults. Results revealed that parental trust was associated with emerging adults' life satisfaction both directly and indirectly via subjective markers of adulthood (i.e…
Linking Identity Processes to Spending Self-Control Capacities in Emerging Adulthood
Becoming financially independent requires financial capabilities, such as capacities to control spending, and prior research suggests that identity may play a role in developing such capacities. This cross-sectional study sought to investigate how identity formation is related to spending self-control through the mediating role of self-regulatory identity functions. Participants were 481 Lithuanian students (40% employed; 57.8% women; M age = 20.…

Relationships With Parents, Identity Styles, and Positive Youth Development During the Transition From Adolescence to Emerging Adulthood
The purpose of this study was to examine the links between relationships with parents, identity styles, and positive youth development (PYD), conceptualized as “contribution” to self, family, and community, in Lithuanian youth during the transition from adolescence to emerging adulthood. In Study I, we sought to examine how positive relationships with parents predict contribution with the potential mediating role of autonomy-supportive parenting.…

A Cross-Cultural Perspective on the Relationships between Emotional Separation, Parental Trust, and Identity in Adolescents
Swedish and Lithuanian employed women's subjective well‐being
National differences in subjective well‐being (SWB) and relationships between SWB and socio‐demographic factors were investigated in samples of middle‐aged employed Swedish (N = 316) and Lithuanian (N = 308) women. The results showed that the Swedish women scored significantly higher on each SWB component than their counterparts in Lithuania, except in extrinsic job satisfaction. For the Swedish sample, the largest mean differences between differ…
