Tuberous Worlds: Vegetal Politics and More-Than-Human Relations
Reclaiming Tuberous Kin: Interspecies Verses and Potato Cosmopolitics in the Peruvian Center of Domestication
Tuberous Heroes, Partial Examples, and the Making of Ethical Companions in Agricultural Collectives
The history of capitalism features a number of glorified characters, such as Frederick the Great and Antoine Parmentier, lauded for contributing to national prosperity by purportedly introducing the prolific potato to the masses. This article redirects our attention toward vaunted varieties in the tuber population itself, which here are called tuberous heroes. While popularly dismissed as a humble crop, the potato has also been acknowledged as ha…

To Give a Good Cambio: Economic Affinity, Cheating and the Ambivalent Ethics of Barter in the Southern Andes
Ecological Nostalgias
Introducing the study of econostalgias through a variety of rich ethnographic cases, this volume argues that a strictly human centered approach does not account for contemporary longings triggered by ecosystem upheavals. In this time of climate change, this book explores how nostalgia for fading ecologies unfolds into the interstitial spaces between the biological, the political and the social, regret and hope, the past, the present and the futur…

Reproductive Commodities: Work, Joy, and Creativity in Argentinean Miniature Fairs
This article explores the Kolla cosmology of commodity exchange and creativity in the Argentinean Andes by looking at the circulation of miniatures during the feast day of Saint Anne. An ethnographic description of miniature fairs discloses a complex transactional system involving different entities and fields of action, which creates an extension of the devotee's subjectivity in space and time. The cosmoeconomics of Saint Anne fairs stress the i…
Barter and Social Regeneration in the Argentinean Andes
Despite the pervasiveness of barter across societies, this mode of transaction has largely escaped the anthropologist's gaze. Drawing on data from fairs in the Argentinean Andes, this book explores fairs' embeddedness within religious celebration, arguing that barter is addressed as a sacrifice to catholic figures and local ancestors, and thus challenging a widespread view of barter as a non-monetary form of commodity exchange. Issues of value, i…

Despite the pervasiveness of barter across societies, this mode of transaction has largely escaped the anthropologist’s gaze. Drawing on data from fairs in the Argentinean Andes, this book addresses a local modality of barter known as cambio. Interspecies Respect and Potato Conservation in the Peruvian Cradle of Domestication
This paper explores people and tuber affective encounters, as they unfold in a biodiversity conservation programme in the Peruvian Andes. It draws on ethnographic data from the Potato Park, renowned worldwide as one of the most successful in-situ initiatives for the conservation of biocultural diversity. Concerned with interspecies relations, the paper focusses on the circulation of respeto that is both an affect and a normative stance posited lo…
Materializing Virtues: Crafted Miniatures as Moral Examples in the Argentinean Andes
In the Argentinean Andes, people craft miniatures in order to please Saint Anne. Most literature on Andean miniatures focuses on their exchange and use. This paper addresses their production process in an attempt to show that the value of miniatures is entangled in practices. Ethnographic description shows that miniatures should please the saint because they are said to be much more complicated to craft than their normally scaled homologues, and …

Barter Fairs, Ethnic Configuration and National Multiculturalism in the Argentinean Andes
In the Argentinean Andes, fairs constitute the main setting where lowland and highland Kolla peasants barter their agricultural production. In order to preserve these encounters - seen as traditional - in a context of peasants' growing participation in capitalist economy, public organizations invest money for boosting old fairs and instituting new ones. The author proposes to qualify these fairs as 'institutional', compared with the 'spontaneous'…
The Elders' Measures: Barter, Value and Kinship in the Argentinean Andes
