  • Hospital competition and health outcomes

    Open Access•Esra Eren Bayindir, Sara Jamalabadi et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Countries increasingly rely on competition among hospitals to improve health outcomes. However, there is limited empirical evidence on the effect of competition on health outcomes in Germany. We examined the effect of hospital competition on quality of care, which is assessed using health outcomes (risk-adjusted in-hospital and post-hospitalization mortality and cardiac-related readmissions), focusing on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treatmen…

  • Digital reading and gender inequality in higher education

Axel Kühn, Ute Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Higher Education Research &…•2023

Digital text has become the dominant medium for participation in higher education. Yet little is known about the consequences from the shift to digital text usage on the academic reading practices of specific groups of students. Using a unique data set of higher education students, we analyse differences in digital reading skills, practices, perception, and experience for female students and male students. Then we explain these differences by soc…

  • Geospatial simulation of urban neighbourhood densification potentials

Open Access•Sven Eggimann, Michael Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2021

Although densification of urban areas is being proposed as a sustainable urbanisation strategy, frameworks for detailed large-scale analysis of densification potentials and their evaluation are lacking. A geospatial simulation framework is presented to assess and evaluate densification potentials at the neighbourhood level of already built-up residential areas. The focus is on post-war neighbourhoods, which are particularly promising for sustaina…

  • Inter-product biases in global precipitation extremes

Open Access•Hirohiko Masunaga, Marc Schröder et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Biases in climatological and extreme precipitation estimates are assessed for 11 global observational datasets constructed with merged satellite measurements and/or rain gauge networks. Specifically, the biases in extreme precipitation are contrasted with mean-state biases. Extreme precipitation is defined by a 99th percentile threshold (R99p) on a daily, 1° × 1° grid for 50 °S–50 °N. The spatial pattern of extreme precipitation lacks distinct fe…

  • Epidemiology and cost of seasonal influenza in Germany - a claims data analysis

Open Access•Stefan Scholz, Oliver Damm et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The burden of influenza is highest among infants and young children, which is also reflected in the economic burden. Influenza related costs per case are nearly double for infants compared to persons over 60 years of age

  • Dimensions of remapping

    Ute Schneider•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Geography•2018•References: 10

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Athenäum publishing house in Germany planned a revised and extended edition of Heinrich Schiffers’ (1901–1982) successful book Wilder Erdteil Afrika (English translation: The Quest for Africa). The bestselling author had published several monographs about Africa since the 1930s, and authored and edited numerous works after World War II. Nearly all of these works, whose substantial print runs are testament to the…

  • Mapping the Germans

    Ute Schneider•ARTICLE•German History•2016

Since historical science has ‘discovered’ space as a historical category at the end of the twentieth century, the visualization of space has obtained attention as well. By now, numerous insightful works have been published about both the nineteenth and twentieth century. The works discuss maps as important sources that have heavily influenced opinions and perceptions of space and the world and that became increasingly important during the ninetee…

  • Wozu lesen?“

    Ute Schneider•ARTICLE•Internationales Archiv für…•2014

This paper historicizes the functions of reading in social contexts. • Literaturbetrieb

Alexander Honold, Reto Sorg et al.•BOOK•Literaturbetrieb•2013

The Colour of Religion. Open Access•Felix Wedegaertner, Hussein al-Warith et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

In accordance to their specific values female khat users are most ambivalent towards their habit. Positive opinions scored lower than expected in the consumers. This finding creates a strong toe-hold for gender-specific public health interventions
