  • On the Altars of Sacrifice in Israeli Cinema

Shmuel Shepkaru•ARTICLE•The Journal of the Middle East…•2026

This essay examines the development of a recurring topos in Israeli cinema that embodies a central cultural myth and its transformations over time. Although this myth does not originate within Israeli culture, it interacts dynamically with national and patriotic mythologies prevalent in Western national cultures, as well as with specific Middle Eastern societies that demand altruistic sacrifice for religion and nationality. In a Middle Eastern co…

New York, ny: Palgrave Macmillan, 2009. xii + 249 pp. ISBN: 978-0230602793.In Christian Memories of the Maccabean Martyrs, Daniel Joslyn-Siemiatkoski examines how late-antique and medieval Christian writers from the eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, and northwestern Europe employed the martyrological stories of Eleazar and the mother of the seven sons from Second and Fourth Maccabees to address the …

  • Christian Resurrection and Jewish Immortality during the First Crusade

    Shmuel Shepkaru•ARTICLE•Speculum•2014•References: 12

Various studies on Jewish martyrdom (kiddush ha-Shem) during the First Crusade have shown how the Christian environment influenced the religious thinking and behavior of late-eleventh- and twelfth-century German (Ashkenazic) Jews. This observation has been shown to ring true also with respect to the martyrs' postmortem rewards, which are described in three early-twelfth-century interrelated Hebrew chronicles pertaining to crusaders' violence agai…

  • The Preaching of the First Crusade and the Persecutions of the Jews

    Shmuel Shepkaru•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Although the versions of Pope Urban’s call for the First Crusade focus on the need to liberate the Holy Land from the Muslims, crusaders and locals attacked first the communities of the Franco-German (Ashkenazic) Jews. Both contemporary and modern historians have offered a variety of explanations for these uncalled-for devastating attacks. Without discounting some of these proposals, this article applies the psychological explanation of Displacem…

  • Death Twice over

    Shmuel Shepkaru•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•2002•Cited by: 1

This article analyzes the peculiar phrase "being killed a second time" referring to the Jews, which is found in the Hebrew accounts of the First Crusade in 1096. Through a comparison with and analysis of Christian hagiography and medieval Latin documents using the same phrase, the study shows that there is a dual meaning of this metaphor. On the one hand, the phrase conveys the Jewish martyrs' strong commitment to their God by showing their willi…

  • From After Death to Afterlife

    Open Access•Shmuel Shepkaru•ARTICLE•AJS Review The Journal of the…•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 9

In rabbinical literature the belief in a postmortem existence is rather obvious. Related terminology is relatively abundant, although fluid and obscure at times. The use of this terminology by a diversity of Jewish sources further complicates the understanding of the enigmatic notion called afterlife. The purpose of this article is to explore one aspect of the Jewish credo of the afterlife: the nature of divine recompense in relation to martyrdom…
