Translanguaging as a wrecking ball, a paradigm buster - and a potent weapon in the hands of the Global South
This paper takes a look at the underlying reasons for the emergence and the growing popularity of the phenomenon of translanguaging. I argue that, over and above the flippant and jocose attitude, widely discussed in the literature, that it betrays, translanguaging also bespeaks a certain political positioning and often posturing. This aspect of translanguaging becomes all the more evident when we view it against the backdrop of postcolonialism, a…
"A somewhat skeptical essay on teaching/learning a language other than the "mother tongue: Conundrums and Practical Challenges Under the Lenses of Multilingualism
The idea of teaching/learning additional languages is a highly context-sensitive one, if only because it hinges crucially on what constitutes one's 'mother tongue'. The idea of mother tongue may seem too obvious to need any further comment; but in societally multilingual settings, it is far too slippery to be of any use as a theoretical term. In such societies, which routinely use more than one language for their day-to-day transactions, ordinal …
Becoming and being an applied linguist: Celebrating the seminal work of Marilda Cavalcanti
The aim of this paper is to offer some remarks on the important contribution of Prof. Marilda Cavalcanti to the development of the academic discipline called 'Applied Linguistics' in Brazil. It seeks to pay tribute to this great scholar and researcher for her pioneering spirit and dedication to the consolidation of the discipline in the Brazilian academic scenario, all too often in what appeared to many to be a gesture of rowing against the tide.…
Applied Linguists: Its Post-Emancipation Prospects as Well as Challenges Ahead
This paper seeks out future directions for the field of study that has by now fully consolidated itself as an independent discipline under the name of Applied Linguistics. Special attention is drawn to the 'loosening up' of the very notion of language as a hermetically sealed entity, impervious to outside influences, as well as the groundbreaking critical turn it has taken in recent years, along with the impulse to intervene in the states of affa…
Down Memory Lane … as Lael Celebrates its Golden Jubilee
In this paper, I attempt to trace the evolution of LAEL over the 50 years of its history, intertwining the narrative with my own personal trajectory since my arrival in Brazil in 1976. The narrative makes no claim to being a step by step account of the different facets of the Programme’s history. Rather, the focus is on how its developments through the years mirror the fortunes of the very area of academic pursuit we call Applied Linguistics
Competência transcultural e novos letramentos: A Necessidade Incontornável Do Pensamento Crítico
Language issue in the 21st century and the centuries ahead: An Exercise in Crystal-Ball Gazing
Written in a speculative spirit, this paper is an attempt to take a peek into what the future might hold for the study of language. It takes into account the phenomenal changes that the world has undergone since the days when modern linguistics constituted itself as an academic discipline. It is argued that these changes call for a radical rethinking of some of the fundamental assumptions about language that have hardly ever been questioned until…

The complex mosaic of Englishes
The English language is no longer any one nation's monopoly; practically every nation on earth has a stake in it. This is the overall thrust of the book in the spotlight. The amazing journey of the language from a none-too-conspicuous dialect once spoken on a part of a tiny island off the north-western coast of Continental Europe to a language of wider communication across the world is the topic that the book engages with. In the ten chapters tha…

World English’ or ‘World English es ’? Does it make any difference
As the English language spreads across the world like wildfire, many scholars find themselves speculating about its future. Many have claimed that the language is destined to undergo significant changes even to the point of becoming unrecognizable. Just what to call it from now on is however a matter of dispute. At first blush, it might appear that this is matter of splitting hairs, since the name itself is believed to be not all that important. …
Tuning up amidst the din of discordant notes: On a recent bout of identity crisis in applied linguistics
This paper examines some of the key issues that were at the centre of a recent controversy over how best to characterise the status of applied linguistics (AL) and its distinctiveness vis‐à‐vis linguistics proper. It endorses the position maintained by Rampton (1992, 1993, 1997) that AL should assume its role not simply as a field independent of linguistics (the so‐called “Widdowson‐Brumfit stance”) but, more importantly, as an area of enquiry th…

Performativity and the claims of scientificity of modern linguistics
This paper discusses the claim of the situatedness of research in both theoretical and applied linguistics and some of its implications and argues that it is linked to the performativity of all assertions, including scientific ones. More importantly, I argue that it is the regressive infinity of performativity that makes inevitable the passage from presumably 'dispassionate' research to militancy
Emotion and Language Politics: The Brazilian Case
The long tradition in Linguistics of relegating the politics of language to the status of a peripheral concern has to do with the fact that in the Western tradition, language faculty has been viewed as essentially an attribute of the reasoning mind. In this sense, Linguistics is heir to mainstream Philosophy as it has been pursued from Plato on. The objective of this paper is to make a case for the claim that exclusive focus on the rational has o…

The ambivalent role of English in Brazilian politics
The English language plays a pivotal role in the politics of language as it is currently playing itself out in Brazil. People at once like it and loathe it, in what may seem to be a most paradoxical reaction to its growing presence in the daily lives of its citizens. Closer inspection reveals, however, that the ambivalence has to do with the difficult geo-politics of the region and the contradictions it has engendered through the years. The paper…

The history of language planning in Brazil, the only Portuguese speaking country in South America, is shown to have been decisively influenced at every critical moment by prevailing geopolitical interests. The Harris–Edmondson dispute: Identifying the strawmen
The claim made by Harris (1978) that the descriptivist position in respect of performatives is self-defeating has engendered some spirited controversy through the years since then (see Edmondson 1979, 1983, Wachtel, 1980; Spielmann, 1980; Taylor & Wolf, 1981). On the ideological underpinnings of the theory of speech acts
Este trabalho procura pleitear que a Teoria dos Atos de Fala, tal qual ela foi reformulada pelo filósofo norte-americano J. R. Searle, tem uma dimensão fortemente ideológico-política. A Ideologia Do Suprimido: Ou, Como Não Teorizar a Respeito Da Ideologia
Toward an ethically committed linguistics
The pivotal claim of this paper is that ethical issues are invariablypresent in Linguistics even at those moments when one is discussingwhat are presumably ‘purely theoretical’ problems. The reason whymany linguists have difficulty in recognising this is that they areencumbered by a host of dogmas in relation to how a scientificarea of study is constituted. Among these dogmas is the idea thatthe raw materials of the science of language are the so…
