  • Portable elsewhere: Re-mobility, marriage migration, and the ‘death of proximity’ among Ethiopian wives in China

    Open Access•Wei Wang•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2026

Marriage migration does not end mobility; it often reorganises it. Based on 8 months of multi-sited ethnography in Ethiopia and China, supplemented by digital follow-up through WeChat, this article examines how marriage migration produced destination-country immobility for Ethiopian wives in rural China. After arrival, women often became isolated and dependent within multigenerational households, where language barriers, racialised visibility, an…

  • Phonetic Variants of Response Particles o and a in Mandarin Conversations: The Role of Nasalization and Glottalization in Interaction

    Wei Wang•ARTICLE•East Asian Pragmatics•2026

Response particles have been recognised as highly variable in terms of both form and function. It is particularly so for particle-rich languages like Mandarin Chinese, where multiple phonetic variants of a particle can be observed. A question that arises is whether phonetic variants are idiosyncratic uses or distinctive resources in the construction of listener responses. Two of the most frequently used response particles in Mandarin, o and a, ar…

Open Access•Xiaochuan Zhao, Wei Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Objective Shift work disrupts circadian rhythms and is established as a risk factor for metabolic syndrome. While poor sleep quality is often hypothesized as the primary mediator linking shift work to dyslipidemia, the extent to which circadian misalignment affects lipid metabolism independently of sleep complaints remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the independent and combined effects of shift work and sleep quality on serum lipid …
