Impact of Scanning Quality on Deep Learning-Based Contour Vectorization from Topographic Maps
The quality of scanned topographic maps—including parameters such as image compression, scanning resolution, and bit depth—may strongly influence the performance of deep learning models for contour vectorization. In this study, we investigate this dependence by training eight U-Net models on the same map data but under varying input quality conditions. Each model is trained to segment contour lines from the raster input, followed by a postprocess…
Automatic Elevation Contour Vectorization
Historical maps contain valuable topographic information, including altimetry in the form of annotated elevation contours. These contours are essential for understanding past terrain configurations, particularly in areas affected by human activities such as mining or dam construction. To make this data usable in modern GIS applications, the contours must be vectorized—a process that often requires extensive manual work due to noise, inconsistent …
Historical pond systems as long-term composite archives of anthropogenic contamination in the Vrchlice River, Czechia
Aerial Bombing Crater Identification
Places of past conflicts and persistent objects that reflect such events often attract the attention of archaeological prospection which facilitates the construction of conflict narratives. Field prospection as a precise method for localization of aerial bombing craters (as an example of such persistent features) is a highly time- and resource-consuming task. Therefore, methods for automatic identification of such features are evolving. We presen…
Dynamics of Sediments in Reservoir Inflows
A wide variety of geographic information system tools and methods was used for pre-dam topography reconstruction and reservoir bottom surveying in two dam reservoirs in the Ohře River, Czech Republic. The pre-dam topography was reconstructed based on archival aerial imagery and old maps. The benefits and drawbacks of these methods were tested and explained with emphasis on the fact that not all processed archival data are suitable for pre-dam top…
Human-induced prehistoric soil buried in the flood plain of Svratka River, Czech Republic
The natural setting and prehistoric human activity on Holocene floodplains in Central Europe is a compelling issue from several points of view. This environment presents an important sedimentary archive reflecting past human behaviour in interactions with climate change. Two sedimentary sections recorded in the alluvial zone of Svratka River (Moravia) with a buried soil dated to the time span between the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age, and compris…
Monitoring of avulsion channel evolution and river morphology changes using UAV photogrammetry
This paper presents results from monitoring the chute cutoff in the meander bend of the Ondava River in Eastern Slovakia. An avulsion channel was formed in the central part of the meander neck during 2010 flood events, and here we describe the mechanism of evolution and post‐cutoff avulsion channel adjustment using drones, unmanned aerial vehicle ( UAV ) photogrammetry and field survey. Monitoring by UAV images began on 15 June 2012 with 78 proce…

Neolithic Occupation of Svratka Alluvial Plain; Case Study from Brno-Přízřenice, Czech Republic
The study of paleosols, including buried soil horizons, is one of the tools used for understanding the environmental record of the past. Soil development is influenced by climate, time of development, background geology, hydrological conditions and intensity of biological decomposition. Construction works undertaken from 2012 to 2013 in the locality of in Brno-Pzenice, Czech Republic, situated in the inundation zone of the Svratka River, had unco…
