Calcio Storico Fiorentino (CSF) is the reenactment of a sixteenth-century ball game, ‘calcio’, and in particular of the ‘Siege Match’ of 1530, played by the soldiers of the Republic of Florence to encourage themselves and to mock the besieging troops of Charles V, who wanted to take control of the city. Current celebrations include a parade in Renaissance costumes and a calcio tournament, which consists of a radically violent ball game. Since its…

  • Sembrava miele”. L’eccezione del Vin Santo nelle pratiche di consumo del vino in Toscana

    Open Access•Dario Nardini•ARTICLE•Archivio antropologico mediterraneo•2025•References: 13

This special issue on hand-to-hand sports aims to analyse how collective identities and forms of group and community belonging are defined, strengthened, built, imagined or even denied in the sportive and social contexts in which hand-to-hand combat or wrestling disciplines are practised. Considering the wide-ranging cross-cultural distribution of combat and wrestling practices in very different cultures and societies across the contemporary worl…

  • Being Breton through wrestling

    Open Access•Dario Nardini, Aurélie Épron•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2021•References: 36

Gouren is a style of wrestling practiced in Brittany, France. It has been "sportised" during the last century, but it still represents an emblematic tradition for those people involved who exploit its ancient origins to describe it as a distinctive Breton activity. Following the same path of Breton "identity"-one that has been defined in opposition to hegemonic French identity- gouren is largely defined by its practitioners in opposition to the "…

  • Between Tatami Mats and Sawdust

    Dario Nardini•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 1

The competitive schedule of gouren, Breton wrestling, is divided into two seasons. During winter, the wrestlers compete in indoor sports halls, while in summer they wrestle en plein air, in outdoor sawdust arenas, confronting each other in a “traditional” contest called “Mod Kozh” (“old-fashioned”). The structure and the symbolic references of these two kinds of tournaments clearly differ. This article focuses on the different processes of cultur…

  • Living the Dream’

Dario Nardini•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2019•Cited by: 1

In the rapidly growing context of the Gold Coast, Queensland, residents are now trying to affirm a cultural identity that overcomes the view of the city as just a touristic resort. Surfing is playing a significant role in this process. In fact, it has served not only to promote tourism – supporting the image of ‘paradise on Earth’ – but also to characterize the local landscape, define a particular ‘lifestyle’, and delineate the cultural identity …
