  • The Making of the African Road

Kurt Beck, Gabriel Klaeger et al.•BOOK•The Making of the African Road•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 83

The Making of the African Road offers an account of the long-distance road in Africa. Being a latecomer to automobility and far from saturated mass mobility, the African road continues to be open for diverging interpretations and creative appropriations. The road regime on the continent is thus still under construction, and it is made in more than one sense: physically, socially, politically, morally and cosmologically. The contributions to this …

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Gabriel Klaeger•ARTICLE•Africa•2013

Roads and automobility on the African continent are commonly encountered with a rather ambivalent stance, both by Africans and Africanist scholars. This ambivalence emerges from what Adeline Masquelier describes as the ‘profoundly contradictory nature of roads as objects of both fascination and terror’ (2002: 381). In her widely received article on ‘road mythographies’ surrounding Niger's Route 1, Masquelier draws a vivid picture of the ‘contradi…

  • Dwelling on the Road

    Open Access•Gabriel Klaeger•ARTICLE•Africa•2013•Cited by: 18•References: 37

The Accra-Kumasi road, one of Ghana's most important trunk roads, traverses numerous towns and settlements whose residents at times engage intimately with the road on their doorstep. In this article, I provide ethnographic insights into the ways in which roadside dwellers conceptualize - and spatialize - the road and its roadside through distinct repertoires of movement (performed and encountered), through localized storytelling and narratives, t…

  • Rush and Relax

    Gabriel Klaeger•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 31

In this article, I provide ethnographic insights into the lifeworld of roadside entrepreneurs who sell bread to motorists and travellers passing through Ofankor, a suburb of Accra traversed by one of Ghana’s main arterial roads. I show that the daily work of Ofankor’s hawkers in and alongside traffic is marked by their continuous engagement with differential speeds, rhythms and related time frames. These are at the same time constitutive of the h…

  • Religion On The Road

    Gabriel Klaeger•CHAPTER•The speed of change•2009

This chapter addresses the three road situations and their respective fields of spiritual experience in turn. It focuses on how religious and spiritual practices shape the everyday experience and performance of travel by road. The chapter considers a suitable anthropological approach to roads. The focus on spiritual practices and experiences on the road puts the limelight on everyday travellers on Ghana's roads, namely commercial drivers and pass…
