  • La paradoja del «médico disidente»

    Open Access•Fernando Bermúdez•ARTICLE•Discurso & sociedad•2026

  • Grammaticalization of prosodic configurations? The case of evidential interrogative in Spanish

    Open Access•Fernando Bermúdez•ARTICLE•Language Sciences•2025

This study investigates how prosodic evidentials (i. e. evidential markers constituted solely by prosodic configurations, regardless of their lexical and grammatical content) can emerge and develop. This is exemplified by a type of interrogative intonation used to convey assertions presented as shared knowledge, a prosodic configuration that we call evidential interrogative . The conclusion drawn is that prosodic configurations marking evidential…

  • Science as the enemy

    Open Access•Fernando Bermúdez•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2025•References: 4

This study examines how anti-vaccine discourse tries to dismantle scientific authority in post-pandemic contexts. Through Critical Discourse Analysis of two contrasting dialogues from Spanish conservative media (one confrontational, one ideologically aligned) we reveal that epistemic delegitimization strategies shift dramatically with audience composition. In confrontational settings, speakers deploy rationalized skepticism and construct 'reasona…

  • Using prosody to express evidentiality. The case of the quotative

    Open Access•Fernando Bermúdez•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2023•References: 33

The goal of this study was to investigate if pure prosodic marking of evidentiality, more specifically quotation, does exist and, secondly, if the particular prosodic traits involved in such prosodic marking are arbitrary or somewhat motivated. Data containing a set of identical sentence pairs in Spanish (the only difference being the presence or absence of quotation in them) was collected by means of a Discourse Completion Task and analyzed in o…
