  • Cultural Representations of Feminicidio at the US-Mexico Border

    Nuala Finnegan•BOOK•Cultural Representations of…•2018

Since the early 1990s, the repeated murders of women from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico have become something of a global cause célèbre. Cultural Representations of Feminicidio at the US-Mexico Border examines creative responses to these acts of violence. It reveals how theatre, art, film, fiction and other popular cultural forms seek to remember and mourn the female victims of violent death in the city at the same time as they interrogate the political,…

  • Women Writers in the Land of “Virile” Literature

    Open Access•Nuala Finnegan•CHAPTER•History of Mexican Literature•2016

Rosario Castellanos closes her poem “Meditación en el umbral” with the oft-quoted line “otro modo de ser humano y libre / otro modo de ser” (another way of being human and free / another way to be) (1971: 316). Here she expresses a yearning for women to imagine another way of being beyond the time-worn scripts of exceptionality suggested by the female archetypes listed in her poem, including Sappho as well as Mary of Egypt. This yearning has been…

  • Staging Reconciliation

    Nuala Finnegan•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Spanish Studies•2016

Rafael Bonilla’s documentary film La carta (2010), takes Paula Flores—mother of feminicidio victim Sagrario Flores González from Ciudad Juárez—as its centre point. This article traces Paula’s filmic construction as victim, survivor and committed political activist. The documentary is of particular interest for the way in which it reveals the device of letter-writing as a vehicle through which reconciliation between the centre (Mexico City) and it…

  • Feminine Dis-ease in Ciudad Real by Rosario Castellanos

    Nuala Finnegan•ARTICLE•Hispanic Research Journal•2001

Ciudad Real, a book of short stories published by Rosario Castellanos in 1960, has been largely neglected by literary criticism. This article examines the idea of femininity in Ciudad Real, exploring the metaphors of sickness and deformity in the delineation of its female characters. These metaphors contribute to a process of negation of the female body, and the article focuses on that process, as it develops in the protagonists of the stories 'M…

  • At Boiling Point

    Open Access•Nuala Finnegan•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This article explores the mechanisms of Mexican identity as they are constructed in Alfonso Arau's film Como agua para chocolate (1991) (Like Water for Chocolate). In re-designing the characters of Laura Esquivel's novel, Arau produces a range of filmic stereotypes drawn from both the Hollywood and the Mexican traditions of film-making. Through the careful manipulation of filmic devices such as editing, framing and close-ups, many of the features…
