  • Violence and Accusation

    Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Contagion Journal of Violence…•2024

An accusation is at first sight a triadic relation. Accusing relates three poles: the accuser, the accused, and what he or she is accused of—which is also often referred to simply as the “accusation,” as if that accusation, the fault or the crime that is reproached in the person, were enough to define what it is to accuse. A person accuses another one of something, which is then three terms. This is both a social and a mundane relation: social be…

    Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Esprit•2024

  • Anthropomorphism in Human–Robot Co-evolution

    Open Access•Luisa Damiano, Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2018•Cited by: 18•References: 12

Social robotics entertains a particular relationship with anthropomorphism, which it neither sees as a cognitive error, nor as a sign of immaturity. Rather it considers that this common human tendency, which is hypothesized to have evolved because it favored cooperation among early humans, can be used today to facilitate social interactions between humans and a new type of cooperative and interactive agents - social robots. This approach leads so…

Paul Dumouchel, Reiko Gotoh•BOOK•Social bonds as freedom•2015

Central to discussions of multiculturalism and minority rights in modern liberal societies is the idea that the particular demands of minority groups contradict the requirements of equality, anonymity, and universality for citizenship and belonging. • Reciprocity: Nuclear Risk and Responsibility

    Paul Dumouchel, ProtoSociology Project•ARTICLE•ProtoSociology•2015

Focusing on the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident, this article argues that there is or can be a form of reciprocity between the victims of a catastrophe and society at large to the extent that victims become the occasion and rationale for social reforms. The victims’ contribution to society in this case is the simple fact of being victims. Such a form of reciprocity requires a particular relation to time which Jean-Pierre Dupuy has recently …

  • La vie des robots et la nôtre

    Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Multitudes•2015

Rationality and Explanations in Economics is an interesting book which defends a challenging thesis, but, as we will see, all three terms, rationality, explanations and economics, raise problems and require specifications. Maurice Lagueux proposes the provocative thesis that explanation in economics rests on a very minimal conception of rationality, one which corresponds more or less to Karl Popper’s principle of rationality: that agents act in a…

  • Emotions as Strategic Signals

    Open Access•Don Ro, Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Rationality and Society•2004•Cited by: 6•References: 10

In this article, we ask how much, if anything, of Robert Frank's (1988, 2004) theory of emotions as evolved strategic commitment devices can survive rejection of its underlying game-theoretic model. Frank's thesis is that emotions serve to prevent people from reneging on threats and promises with enough reliability to support cooperative equilibria in prisoner's dilemmas and similar games with inefficient dominant equilibria. We begin by showing …

  • Trust as an Action

    Open Access•Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•European Journal of Sociology•2005•Cited by: 1

Most authors view trust as a psychological disposition that motivates an agent to cooperative behavior in circumstances where the consequences of the agent's action are uncertain and especially when this uncertainty depends on the reaction of other agents. This article criticizes this general approach and argues that trust is best seen as the action rather than as whatever it is that motivates it. Trust is defined as an act through which an agent…

  • Y a-t-il des sentiments moraux

    Open Access•Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 7

A quick survey of the literature reveals that authors disagree as to which sentiments are moral and which are not, they disagee as to how to distinguish between moral and other sentiments, and finally that often the same author will claim a sentiment is moral at some times but not at others. These difficulties arise, I argue, from an underlying concept of emotion that I call atomism. Viewing emotions as means of coordination among agents, rather …

  • The Role of Fiction in Evolutionary Biology

    Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•SubStance•1993

AROUND 1579 SIR PHILIP SYDNEY ARGUED, in The Apology for Poetry, that poets never lie because they never assert anything. This is a rather strange defense. Literature is acquitted of lying because it lacks the mens rea necessary to tell the truth. The accused is innocent of the charge because he is held to be incompetent. Literature has remained chained to this judgment, or at least to the second half of it, and often for the very reasons invoked…

  • Persona: Reason and Representation in Hobbes's Political Philosophy

    Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•SubStance•1996

REPRESENTATION IS USUALLY CONSIDERED one of key concepts of modern political theory. As such, is viewed as a mechanism of legitimization that defines a form of government, and it is generally linked to modem democracy. A representative government is a type of political organization where power is held through accord, agreement or authorization of those governed. From this point of view, representation is seen as a characteristic of government or …

  • Malheur moral, jus in bello et responsabilité morale

    Paul Dumouchel•ARTICLE•Raisons politiques•2005
