The influences of discourse and perceptual factors on Mandarin-speaking children’s verbal and non-verbal referential acts
Previous research has shown that children’s referential choices are influenced by pragmatic factors in discourse (e.g., prior mention) and perceptual contexts (e.g., joint attention). However, most studies focused primarily on the verbal modality, with relatively little attention paid to children’s multimodal referential competence. To address this gap, the present study examined Mandarin-speaking children’s verbal and non-verbal referential acts…

Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience in College Students in China
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mindfulness in Chinese College Students During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Mindfulness has been found to have many positive effects on life outcomes, including mental health and educational achievement. However, less is known about the antecedents of mindfulness, particularly in Chinese college students. This study examines the effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on mindfulness among Chinese college students in September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that ACEs negatively affected student…
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Psychological Well-Being in Chinese College Students
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including child abuse/neglect and household challenges, are a prevalent social issue that impacts individuals' well-being worldwide. Relatively few ACEs studies orient to the presence of psychological wellness, especially in ethnically Chinese populations. Furthermore, less is known about resilience as a mechanism between ACEs and psychological well-being, in addition to the moderating effect of gender. This …

This study examined the effects of early childhood exposure to IPV between ages 1 and 3 on depression symptoms at age 15 and investigated whether maternal physical punishment at age 5 and peer bullying victimisation at age 9 affected the association. Dat…

Mindfulness, Emotion and Behaviour
Migrant children in China who move from rural to urban areas face significantly greater emotional and behavioural challenges than their urban peers. In recent decades, western countries have used mindfulness to enhance child psychosocial and behavioural outcomes. This approach has not yet been applied to rural‐to‐urban migrant children in China. This study utilised one‐group pretest‐posttest design to examine the effects of a 4‐week school‐based …

Using the 1994-1998 waves of the Current Population Survey-Child Support Supplement (N =5,387), the aims of this study are to document child support obligation rates of nonresident fathers, to examine the effect of the obligation rate on child support compliance, and to calculate the trade-off between fathers' financial responsibility and children's well-being, paying particular attention to low-income fathers. The results indicate that low-incom…
The effect of child support on welfare exits and re‐entries

The Impact of Child Support Enforcement on Nonmarital and Marital Births
Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this article provides evidence that women who live in states with effective child‐support enforcement, measured as both strict child‐support legislation and high child‐support expenditure, are more likely to have marital births and less likely to have nonmarital births. The findings suggest that the deterrence effect of child‐support enforcement on men dominates the opposite effect of enforcement o…

Temporal reference in Chinese mother–child conversation
This paper explores two Mandarin-speaking children's (3;2 and 3;3) ability to refer to the past in mother–child conversation. The approach encompasses morphosyntactic, semantic and discourse-pragmatic perspectives. The results show that the children tend to refer to immediate past spontaneously, but rely heavily on elicitation when referring to earlier past. It is suggested that maternal scaffolding functions as a discourse support for children t…

Mandarin Temporality Inference in Child, Maternal and Adult Speech
Previous studies on child language acquisition of temporality have focused primarily on linguistic devices such as tense and aspect markers; this study, however, adopts a different approach. By examining discourse-pragmatic resources, it investigates how implicit past reference was inferred in Mandarin child speech, maternal speech and adult speech. This approach is especially suitable for studying Mandarin Chinese, a tenseless language. The anal…
