Linguistically diverse future educators
Following de Certeau, Santello in 2022 invited a re-theorisation of creativity within translanguaging research to consider the tactical ways in which plurilingual people inhabit, rather than transcend or transform, ‘what is given’ in terms of linguistic, social or institutional boundaries. Responding to this challenge, this contribution is based mainly on an exploration of interviews with linguistically diverse (future) teachers/educators conduct…
Foregrounding co-artistry in an aesthetic and plurilingual/pluriliteracies approach to additional language teaching and learning
In this article, we propose an aesthetic and plurilingual/pluriliteracies approach to additional (or second, foreign...) language teaching and learning. The research reported on took place in a secondary school in Barcelona where young people take on the role of teachers of the host languages (i.e., Catalan and Spanish) to adult migrants. We focus on a plurilingual poetry workshop offered in this program as an empirical foundation for the propose…
Being plurilingual versus becoming a linguistically sensitive teacher
The beliefs of pre-service teachers in initial teacher education (ITE) in Catalonia about plurilingualism and teaching in diverse classrooms are analysed and tensions in their discourse are observed. Following the analysis of discourse in interaction (e.g. Heller [2005]. Discourse and interaction. In D. Schiffrin, D. Tannen, & H. E. Hamilton (Eds.), The handbook of discourse analysis (pp. 250–264). Blackwell Publishers Ltd), we analyse data from …
Introduction–socially Just Plurilingual Education in Europe
The articles in this special issue explore approaches to research and action in language education that have the potential to transform subjectivities and practices in relation to linguistic diversity. They seek ways within education and teacher education to overcome what Gogolin ([1994]. Der monolinguale ‘habitus’ der multilingualen Schule. Waxmann Verlag) called the ‘mononlingual habitus’, i.e. the deep-seated habit of assuming monolingualism a…
Competence, Communicative and Linguistic
The notion of communicative competence, proposed by Dell Hymes, emerged in reaction to the concept of linguistic competence put forward by Noam Chomsky. Chomsky distinguished between linguistic performance, or actual language use in context, and linguistic competence, or innate language knowledge. He claimed that only the latter was worthy of scientific attention. Hymes refuted this distinction and the disregard for performance, proposing instead…
We analyse data collected at multilingual schools in Catalonia, taking a plurilingual and socio-cultural Conversation Analysis approach to the interactions studied. The analytical sections of the article show how plurilingual practices are resources for students’ participation in classroom activities; we argue that language learning is a process that is reflected in how students’ participation is achieved and modified in classroom interaction ove…
Resemiotisation from page to stage
This article reports on part of an ethnographic research project undertaken over a period of 20 months in Leeds, UK, with a youth spoken word (YSW) poetry organisation. The research focused on the fluid practices in which the youth engage that span spoken, written, visual, gestural, digital, musical and spatial modes, and across times and places. Given its inherent fluidities, YSW is a particularly interesting practice for studying semiosis. Amon…
Translanguaging space and creative activity
This paper focuses on an innovative transdisciplinary educational arts-based learning project, LangScape Curators, which links to and leads from research conducted for the AHRC-funded ‘Translation and Translanguaging’ project. Here, we describe how we work collaboratively with creative practitioners to use a variety of creative arts methods with young people to explore the linguistic landscapes of Leeds. We propose a theoretical framework for col…
Coordinated action, communication, and creativity in basketball in superdiversity
This paper examines the complex social space of basketball training sessions at a sports centre in superdiverse inner-city Leeds, contextualising the site in relation to stigmatising discourses that suggest disorderliness and a lack of social cohesion. The microanalysis of video data from the training sessions counteracts these discourses by showing how social orderliness, cooperation, and creativity unfold in the details of interaction. The sign…
Doing Understanding in Transient, Multilingual Communities in Higher Education
This article analyzes interactions taking place in two transient communities involving local and international actors at a Catalan university. In scenarios in which established norms for language use are less available, people from different language backgrounds face the practical issue of establishing a common means for accomplishing understanding. This study examines how participants in the encounters establish a plurilingual medium of interact…
Conceptualising multilingual higher education in policies, pedagogical designs and classroom practices
In striving for internationalisation, government and university policies in Catalonia promote the use of English in classrooms in two ways that often overlap: (1) as a lingua franca aiding the participation of international students and (2) through immersion approaches targeting local students. However, as the findings presented in this article suggest, many of these policies, and resulting higher education curricula and pedagogies, are materiali…
Constructing content and language knowledge in plurilingual student teamwork
This paper explores how students in an Educational Psychology subject in a university L2 immersion context accomplish learning, mobilise their plurilingual repertoires and restructure their participation in carrying out a teamwork task over the course of approximately one week. The study is novel in several ways. First, it aims to fill a gap in the literature by exploring dynamics of knowledge construction in a multilingual, ‘internationalised’ u…
Plurilingual resources for ‘welcoming’ at a university service for international students
This paper studies the situated meaning given to a so-called ‘welcome’ service for international students at a Catalan university. The official business of the service is to offer support with bureaucratic procedures and information about available services, including those for learning Catalan. However, the complex range of overlapping activities emerging in interactions at the service leads us to question how participants themselves (i.e. servi…
Plurilingual teaching and learning practices in ‘internationalised’ university lectures
This article explores how participants in ‘internationalised’ university lectures draw on the different plurilingual (and multimodal) resources available to them in accomplishing teaching and learning activities. The data are from lectures that took place in four different technology subjects at two Catalan universities. Two aspects of the corpus are focused on in the analysis. On the one hand, what is referred to as a plurilingual multimodal des…
How Do the Apples Reproduce (Themselves)?” How Teacher Trainees Negotiate Language, Content, and Membership in a CLIL Science Education Classroom at a Multilingual University
This article discusses findings from ongoing research into plurilingual group work interaction in a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) teacher training classroom at a university in Catalonia, Spain. We explore how participants make use of available verbal and non-verbal resources-for example, their multilingual verbal repertoires, posture, gesture, gaze-to collaboratively accomplish various activities and, specifically, to problemati…
Health Policy
The ills of the US health care system cannot be remedied by a quick fix and the symptoms can no longer be dismissed as acute. The authors revisit yesterday’s ideas and policies which have led the United States painfully stumbling over unforeseen consequences. Dwindling access, rising costs, and inequities in distribution of services are among the problems resulting from short-term politically expedient decisions made without reference to each oth…
