Perspective—Finding the Organization in Organizational Theory
Organization theory is a theory without a protagonist. Organizations are typically portrayed in organizational scholarship as aggregations of individuals, as instantiations of the environment, as nodes in a social network, as members of a population, or as a bundle of organizing processes. This paper hopes to highlight the need for understanding, explicating, and researching the enduring, noun-like qualities of the organization. We situate the or…
Studying Differences between Organizations
This volume is motivated by key questions and challenges associated with reviving and developing a comparative perspective. One organizing theme of the volume is to present comparative analysis as a means to explain and describe organizational heterogeneity, at varying levels and contexts. While much empirical work looks for the sources of homogeneity within fields, industries, etc., we believe that one advantage of doing comparative analysis is …

What are the Responsibilities of Business to Society?
Albert and Whetten Revisited
The objective of this article is to formulate the concept of organizational identity in such a way that it can be distinguished analytically from related concepts, such as organizational culture and image, and can be used operationally to identify bona fide organizational identity claims referents and associated identity-referencing discourse. The proposal amounts to a stronger version of Albert and Whetten (1985), in that the implicit links betw…
Family Firms and Social Responsibility
Little is known about the impact of family ownership and management on corporate social performance. Some scholars have suggested that family firms are not likely to act in a socially responsible manner, while others have indicated that socially responsible behavior on the part of the family firm protects the family's assets. This preliminary study compares the degree to which family and nonfamily firms are socially responsible using data from 19…
Members' Identification with Multiple-Identity Organizations
In the field of organizational identity, theory development has far outpaced theory testing. Specifically, several researchers have proposed identity-based models of organizational identification but few have operationalized and tested them. Furthermore, virtually no research has explored how members identify with multiple-identity organizations. This study addresses these gaps and makes three specific contributions to identity theory. First, we …
A Social Actor Conception of Organizational Identity and Its Implications for the Study of Organizational Reputation
The objective of this article is to clarify the conceptual domains of organizational identity, image, and reputation. To initiate this theory development process, we present a “social actor” conception of organizational identity. Identity-congruent definitions of image and reputation are then specified and an integrated model proposed. With the aid of this model, a structural flawin the organizational reputation literature is identified and suita…

Environmental change, enrollment decline and institutional response
The purpose of this paper is to develop a model of environmental change and institutional response that shows why a variety of strategies are required by colleges and universities in dealing with declining enrollments. Much as been written in recent years about how institutional leadership should plan for and react to declining enrollments, but no comprehensive overview of the problem or response to it has emerged (Whetten, 1981). Enrollment decl…

Organization Setsize and Diversity
This study investigates the interorganizational linkages ofpeople-processrng organiza tions. Specifically, the determinants of the size and diversity of their organization sets are examined. Predictors are grouped according to the amount of discretion local agency directors have to manipulate them. It is shown that the best predictors of organization set size and composition are variables over which local adminrstrators have little control. The i…
