  • Zamucoan Person Marking as a Perturbed System

    Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto•ARTICLE•Studia Linguistica•2021

This paper analyzes the Zamucoan system of Person markers: personal pronouns, verbal and possessive inflection. Comparing the three documented languages (Ayoreo and Chamacoco, currently spoken, and extinct Old Zamuco), one can reconstruct for a very ancient stage of this language family an agglutinating structure for both personal pronouns and verbal inflection, with Person and Number dealt with by, respectively, prefixes and suffixes. However, p…

  • On nominal tense

    Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2020

Nordlinger & Sadler’s (2004. Nominal tense in crosslinguistic perspective. Language 80. 776–806) seminal work fostered an intense debate on the semantics of nominal tense systems, with the side effect of widening the typological coverage of this grammatical feature. This paper aims at contributing to the ongoing debate. In contrast with work by Tonhauser, who excluded ‘tense’ as a semantic component of the Paraguayan Guaraní nominal tense system,…

  • Two types of morphologically expressed non-verbal predication

Pier Marco Bertinetto, Luca Ciucci et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2019

The morphological expression of non-verbal predication is a geographically widespread, although not very frequent, typological feature. This paper highlights the existence of two radically contrasting types of non-verbal predicative inflection. Construction A has already been described in the literature. It consists of attaching person-sensitive inflection markers to non-verbal predicates, possibly extending this treatment to adverbs and adverbia…

  • Possessive inflection in Proto-Zamucoan

    Luca Ciucci, Pier Marco Bertinetto•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2017

This paper presents a comparative analysis of possessive inflection in the three known Zamucoan languages: Ayoreo and Chamacoco – still spoken in the Chaco area between Bolivia and Paraguay – plus †Old Zamuco, described by the Jesuit father Ignace Chomé in the first half of the 18th century. The comparison allows us to build a plausible reconstruction of Proto-Zamucoan possessive inflection. Old Zamuco appears to be the most conservative language…

  • Tense and aspect

Pier Marco Bertinetto, Mario Squartini•CHAPTER•Oxford Guide to the Romance…•2016

This chapter addresses some of the most striking and interesting problems and questions related to tense and aspect in Romance. It covers the distribution of most widespread temporal and aspectual grammaticalized distinctions, including the expression of perfective past, future and future in the past; auxiliary constructions, and various aspectual categories; relationship and competition between synthetic and periphrastic forms; development of as…

  • Tenselessness in South American indigenous languages with focus on Ayoreo (Zamuco)

Pier Marco Bertinetto, Talatou Clémentine Pacmogda•ARTICLE•Africana Linguistica•2013

This article presents the structure of the tense-aspect system of Moore (Gur, Niger Congo), a language spoken in Burkina Faso by nearly half of the population, for the purpose of framing it from a typological viewpoint. Section 2 describes the basic structure of the system : morpheme order and principal components, with the fundamental dichotomy between regular and irregular verbs (traditionally referred to as verbs of ‘ action’/‘ state’). Sectio…

  • Parataxis, hypotaxis and para-hypotaxis in the Zamucoan languages

    Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto, Luca Ciucci•ARTICLE•Linguistic Discovery•2012

The term "para-hypotaxis" is commonly used by Romance linguists to refer to sentences containing a proleptic dependent clause, with the main clause introduced by a coordinator. It is thus an intermediate structure between parataxis and hypotaxis; it should not be confused, however, with seemingly analogous phenomena, such as co-subordination. Traditionally considered as an idiosyncratic feature of the Old Romance languages (as well as Biblical He…

  • The sound pattern of Standard Italian, as compared with the varieties spoken in Florence, Milan and Rome

Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto, Michele Loporcaro•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2005•Citada por: 17

This paper is a condensed presentation of the phonetics and phonology of Standard Italian, compared to the most prestigious local accents, viz. those of Florence, Milan and Rome. Historically based on the Florentine pronunciation, and traditionally identified with it, Standard Italian is nowadays used by trained speakers such as stage actors and (but less and less so) radio and TV speakers. The present paper aims at depicting the most salient fea…

  • Tense, aspect and syntax

Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto, Valentina Bianchi•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2003

This review is devoted to the bulk of Giorgi and Pianesi's (1997) proposal for the (morpho-) syntax and semantics of tense and aspect, presented in chapters 1-4 of their book. The authors investigate the cross-linguistic variation in the semantics of various tense forms (Present, Imperfect, Present Perfect) and claim that it can be directly linked to their morphosyntactic properties, expressed in terms of an explicit theory of functional features…

    Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1994•Citada por: 6

L'A. veut mettre a jour les raisons theoriques qui permettent de rejeter l'affirmation communement admise selon laquelle les progressifs et les habituels sont statifs. La notion de statif appartient au sous-domaine de l'action, alors que les notions de progressif et habituel appartiennent au sous-domaine de l'aspect. Il existe cependant un cas ou les habituels sont statifs: les attitudinaux, un sous-ensemble des habituels, se referent aux situati…

  • Why the passé antérieur should be called passé immediatement antérieur

    Open Access•Pier Marco Bertinetto•ARTICLE•Linguistics•1987

Rohrer (1982) has recently suggested that the passé anterieur should more properly be called passé postérieur; and a very similar view was expressed not long ago by Martin (1971). Although there are indeed instances in which one could be led to believe that these proposals are justified, this paper will attempt to demonstrate that the traditional view (reflected in the terminology currently used) is basically sound. More than that, the analysis d…
