    Nobumi Iyanaga•ARTICLE•ASDIWAL Revue genevoise d…•2024

From the mid-10th century onward, in cases of illness, the Japanese aristocracy relied on new Buddhist healing methods based on spiritual possession techniques. This essay examines the features and procedures according to which monks and mediums operated the healing. This method, of Indian origin, was imported in Japan through Esoteric Buddhism, and was adapted in order to fit healing purposes. The author focuses his analysis on the role played b…

    Nobumi Iyanaga•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2020

This article presents a translation of a short medieval Shinto text titled Bon-Kan Dōmei Shakugi or “Exegesis of an Identical Term in Sanskrit and Chinese.” The “identical term” in question is vajra, one of the most important objects both at the symbolic and ritual level in esoteric Buddhism. The author first tries to clarify the meaning of the somewhat ambiguous expression of the title “identical term in Sanskrit and Chinese.” A fully annotated …

  • Modernisation des temples bouddhiques et société locale

Masataka Suzuki, Ignacio Quiros et al.•TRANSLATOR•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2013

This paper studies the modernization of a Buddhist temple, Nanzō-in located at Sasaguri town, Fukuoka prefecture in Kyūshū, and its socio-religious relationship with the local society. This temple belongs to the Shingon sect and is the first stop of the 88 pilgrimage sites, fudasho, replicas of the Shikoku Reijyō based upon Kōbō Daishi belief. According to legend, Sasaguri pilgrimage sites had been founded in 1835, and they flourished until the M…

  • Medieval Shintō as a Form of 'Japanese Hinduism'

    Nobumi Iyanaga•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2006

  • The Medieval Cult of Gyōki and Ise Shrines

This essay discusses theories of the emperor in medieval Shintō. First in the context of jien's Buddhist theory of the emperor in the Gukanshō, then Kitabatake Chikafusa's Ise Shintō theory of the emperor are taken up. The case of jihen is then contrasted with these views and serves as the main focus of the essay. Jien accepted the origins of the Imperial lineage from the Age of the Gods, but he believed that the ruler of necessity borrowed from …

  • Tantrism and Reactionary Ideologies in Eastern Asia

    Nobumi Iyanaga•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2002

    Nobumi Iyanaga•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•1996

A curious myth of the creation of Japan can be found in many medieval Japanese literary texts. When the creator god (Izanagi or Amaterasu) is about to create Japan, King Māra of the Sixth Heaven comes to prevent him from doing so, because he foresees that if this country is created, Buddhism will flourish there, and he will lose his power. Izanagi or Amaterasu is compelled to make a promise that he (or she) will not tolerate the coming of Buddhis…
