Improving word reading skills of low‐skilled readers: An intervention combining a syllable‐based approach with digital game‐based features
Distinguishing between struggling and skilled readers based on their prosodic speech patterns in oral reading: An exploratory study in grades 2 and 4
The purpose of this study was to examine if prosodic patterns in oral reading derived from Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) could distinguish between struggling and skilled German readers in Grades 2 (n = 67) and 4 (n = 69). Furthermore, we investigated whether models estimated with RQA measures outperformed models estimated with prosodic features derived from prosodic transcription. According to the findings, struggling second graders ap…

Policy Worlds: Anthropology and the Analysis of Contemporary Power
There are few areas of society today that remain outside the ambit of policy processes, and likewise policy making has progressively reached into the structure and fabric of everyday life. An instrument of modern government, policy and its processes provide an analytical window into systems of governance themselves, opening up ways to study power and the construction of regimes of truth. This volume argues that policies are not simply coercive, c…
Whose limit? Water and democracy in a Green Californian Desert
Groundwater governance in Cuyama Valley, California unites the structural dilemmas of neoliberal environmental governance: a weak state, powerful corporations, a population called to participate but not to decide, and a limited vital resource. Creating institutions of self-governance in the conflictual domain of groundwater use draws local actors into the center of political struggles and strategies, as the State of California avoids governing or…
Fecal Short-Chain Fatty Acid Ratios as Related to Gastrointestinal and Depressive Symptoms in Young Adults
OBJECTIVE: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced by the gut microbiota and may reflect health. Gut symptoms are common in individuals with depressive disorders, and recent data indicate relationships between gut microbiota and psychiatric health. We aimed to investigate potential associations between SCFAs and self-reported depressive and gut symptoms in young adults. METHODS: Fecal samples from 164 individuals (125 were patients with psyc…
Glyphosate—A love story. Ordinary thoughtlessness and response‐ability in industrial farming
More than 8.6 billion kilograms of glyphosate have been used worldwide since the 1970s. Herbicide tolerant crops became the lynchpin of the technological revolution for large‐scale farming first in the United States and Canada, and now in Europe. Zero‐till farming, as a production scheme and a world view, is based on simplifications promoted by a handful of transnational corporations with the complicity of politicians looking for easy solutions f…
Do Respondents Get used to Answering Sensitive Questions
Issues associated with collecting data on sensitive topics are widely studied in survey research. Respondents’ reactions to sensitive questions have rarely been addressed from a longitudinal perspective, however, despite panel surveys representing a fundamental data source for social research. This article evaluates whether respondents’ acceptance of sensitive questions increases with repeated interviewing in a panel survey. Drawing on data from …

Co-teaching as a resource for inclusive classes: Teachers’ perspectives on conditions for successful collaboration
Co-teaching is a resource for inclusive classes, which includes the shared instruction of general and special education teachers. Against the background that the inclusive school system in Germany is currently developing, we investigated secondary school co-teachers’ perspectives on the conditions for successful implementation of co-teaching. We interviewed general teachers (n = 17) and special education teachers (n = 16) about their individual e…
Do Temporary Dropouts Improve the Composition of Panel Data? An Analysis of 'Gap Interviews' in the German Family Panel pairfam
In the context of cross-sectional surveys, the scope of research on the impact of response enhancing strategies on sample composition and nonresponse bias is vast. This topic has rarely been addressed for panel studies, however, although these are becoming an increasingly important data source in social research. In this article, we evaluate the impact of reissuing wave nonrespondents on sample composition and survey estimates in the German Famil…

‘To Act upon one's Time …’ From the impulse to resist to global political strategy
This article reflects on the possibilities for political action emerging out of quotidian engagements. Following controversies on the patenting of seeds in Canada and globally within the Committee for Food Security I explore what gave the impulse for political resistance in these different arenas. How did collective action emerge and how did it sustain itself? Three political concepts are important for understanding the political actions that I o…

Peasants
The attempt to define “peasant” and “peasantry” has a long, complicated, and contentious history. The “peasant condition” is historically one of subordination, domination, and exploitation. In the medieval societies of Europe, peasants were tied as persons to their lords. Anthropologists have pointed out that today's “peasants” everywhere have become involved in market relations and debate whether, contrary to “farmers,” they aim at subsistence a…

Through their advisers, projects, and funds, international organizations are active in parts of the world where anthropologists have traditionally done fieldwork among “indigenous” and rural populations. Opportunity or Affection? Participation of Respondents' Partners in a Multi-actor Survey
Multi-actor studies are particularly suited for partner and family research, as they capture relationships beyond the conventional restraint of the household. Previous research on partner participation in the German Family Panel indicates higher participation of cohabiting and married partners compared to those living apart together. The present study evaluates whether this finding is due to unobserved relationship quality aspects associated with…
Fools Gold on the Prairies: Ontologies, Farmers and their Seeds
The "ontological turn" in anthropology is linked to the insight that environmental thinking requires reflecting on conflicting ways of "being and becoming in the world". This article explores how large-scale industrial farmers engage with the world, their ontic relationship with seeds, their direct reconnection to reality and sensorial perception of the non-human. However, seeds not only become what they are in multifarious networks of natural, c…

The Real Dirt on Responsible Agricultural Investments at Rio+20: Multilateralism versus Corporate Self-Regulation
This article uses a fine-grained anthropological and linguistic analysis to expose the routine negotiating practices and power games behind the conclusion of paragraph 115 on responsible agricultural investments during the Rio+20 Conference in June 2012. These negotiations are simultaneously a telling example for the quotidian stuff of international governance-an arena in which much larger forces are played out through small language-based tactic…
The seed and the citizen
While farmers set up conditions for the development of plants, the seeds they help grow into plants determine conditions for the farmers. Modern plants not only have agronomic characteristics but also intellectual property rights, phytosanitary regulations, and classifications attached to them. Interacting with their seeds creates fields of property and power, situations of possibility and impossibility, in which farmers and breeders operate. The…

Infringing and trespassing plants
Patents on objects that have agency such as seeds pose new challenges for governance, raising fundamental questions of control and responsibility. In May 2004 the Supreme Court of Canada found the farmer Percy Schmeiser guilty of infringing the Monsanto patent on genetically modified canola, because he reseeded part of his canola harvest although he knew or ought to have known that it contained seeds of GM canola plants that had blown into his fi…

Relating the philosophy and practice of ecological economics: The role of concepts, models, and case studies in inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability research
We develop a comprehensive multi-level approach to ecological economics (CML-approach) which integrates philosophical considerations on the foundations of ecological economics with an adequate operationalization. We argue that the subject matter and aims of ecological economics require a specific combination of inter- and transdisciplinary research, and discuss the epistemological position on which this approach is based. Les recherches récentes ont prouvé l'existence, en pays igbo, d'importants échanges internes, indépendants du commerce avec l'outre-mer et probablement antérieurs à son apparition.
