Decomposing Spatial Effects of State‐Level Health Outcomes: A Methodological Demonstration and Re‐Analysis
While spatial autoregressive (SAR) models are increasingly used in population‐level psychological studies, researchers often overlook the crucial step of parsing effects into direct, indirect and total impacts, a standard practice in spatial econometrics. In this paper, we demonstrate the necessity of this practice by re‐analyzing Gruda et al.'s (2024) U.S. Dark‐Triad and health dataset with heteroskedasticity‐robust SAR models and full impact de…
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the healthiest of them all – The surprising role of narcissism in state-level health outcomes
This study investigates narcissism's role in state-level health outcomes across the U.S. While often seen as maladaptive, narcissism's adaptive aspects, like self-enhancement, might promote better health. Analyzing data from 4,230 participants in 38 states, we explore the link between dark triad traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy) and health outcomes. States with higher narcissism had lower obesity and depression rates, and a lower…
Don’t Go Chasing Narcissists: A Relational-Based and Multiverse Perspective on Leader Narcissism and Follower Engagement Using a Machine Learning Approach
Although research interest in leader narcissism has been on the rise over the past few years, prior literature has predominantly discussed leader narcissism from a leader-centric perspective. In this article, we provide a relational-based perspective of leader narcissism by examining the interaction between follower personality traits and leader narcissism on follower engagement in an online context. We combine a machine learning (ML) approach an…
Perceptions of Espoused Versus Enacted Culture Around Sexual Misconduct and Other Offenses Among U.S. Military Service Members
Interviews and focus groups with active-duty U.S. military service members and students at military service academies investigated relationships between espoused and enacted culture in perceptions of sexual assault and harassment versus other types of offenses. Results show that participants widely understood and accepted an espoused culture that is intolerant of sexual misconduct. The enacted culture included tolerance of some forms of sexual mi…
Cultural Tightness-Looseness and Perceptions of Effective Leadership
Previous research has investigated the relationship between cultural values and leadership. This research expands on this tradition and examines how the strength of social norms-or tightness-looseness-influences perceptions of effective leadership. Data from Gelfand, Raver, et al. were integrated with GLOBE's leadership research to examine the attributes of leaders seen as leading to effectiveness in tight and loose cultures. Analyses of data acr…

Latent Class Procedures: Applications to Organizational Research
In this overview, the authors use the seven studies included in the feature topic as a platform to delineate three areas that latent class procedures are particularly useful for in advancing the field of organizational research. The first topic area focuses on dealing with the need to identify and understand unobserved subpopulations in organizational research. The second topic area focuses on recognizing the unobserved heterogeneity in measureme…

An Information‐processing Perspective on Leadership and Culture: A Case for Connectionist Architecture

The Search for Ambivalent Sexism: A Comparison of Two Measures
Glick and Fiske have claimed that prior sexism measures are biased because they only capture hostile sexist attitudes and fail to tap benevolent sexist attitudes. The authors of the current article believe that other measures of sexism do, in fact, capture some aspects of benevolent sexism. To examine this hypothesis, they compared Swim, Aikin, Hall, and Hunter’s old-fashioned and modern sexism scales with Glick and Fiske’s Ambivalent Sexism Inve…
An examination of least-squares regression modeling of catastrophe theory
Although catastrophe theory appears to have substantial heuristic value in many areas of psychology, its acceptance has, to some extent, been hampered by the lack of a well-developed analytic framework. Two recent articles by Guastello (1987, 1988) suggest that a change-score least-squares regression model provides a method for testing catastrophe theory models. This article reviews these regression analysis procedures. The problems in the approa…

An Empirical Examination of Two Transformations of Sample Correlations
This paper examines the differential accuracy of the Fisher and Hotelling transformations of the correlation coefficient. Contrary to expectation, the Hotelling transformation provided a minimal gain in power and was associated with a larger Type I error rate when compared to Fisher's formula with small sample sizes. The two transformations produced essentially identical results for larger sample sizes
Objectivity and science: Reply to Kukla
In several articles in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology over the past few years, researchers have argued that the traditional approach to science needs to be reviewed. For example, Sampson (1977, 1978, 1980) forcibly stated that traditional science reflects Western society's values of individualism and capitalism. Sampson argued that a new approach to science should be adopted and that it should be collectivisti c in its assumptio…
