  • Broadband deployment and access to online banking: Does improved technology facilitate adoption

    Open Access•Joan Calzada, Alejandra Pablo•ARTICLE•Telecommunications Policy•2026•References: 30

This paper analyzes the impact of broadband use on online banking adoption and the contracting of online financial products in Spain between 2010 and 2022. Using survey data on household access to information and communication technologies, we assess whether high-speed broadband access facilitates adoption and whether its use narrows or, rather, reinforces existing socioeconomic divides. Results show that fixed broadband increases the probability…

  • Mergers and bank branches: Two decades of evidence from the USA

    Open Access•Joan Calzada, J Malave Calzada et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2023

In recent decades, the US bank market has been exposed to several waves of mergers, resulting in concerns about branch presence and consumer access to financial services. This paper examines the effects of bank mergers on branch density in the period 2000–2020. To do so, we use panel regressions and matching techniques at the census tract level to study the impact of inter- and intrastate mergers before and after the Great Recession of 2007. To g…

  • Conflicting national policies: The creation of the euro and the rebalancing of telecommunications prices

    Open Access•Joan Calzada, Luis Diaz-Serrano•ARTICLE•Telecommunications Policy•2023

Government departments have diverse interests, and on certain occasions, the need to achieve a priority objective in one department may lead to the adoption of inefficient policies in other areas, with long-lasting consequences. In this paper, we analyze the rebalancing of the telecommunications tariffs that took place in the European Union before and after the liberalization of the market in 1998. We show that the objective of satisfying the Maa…

  • Route expansion in the European air transport market

    Joan Calzada, Xavier Fageda•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2018•Cited by: 2

The factors accounting for the significant increase in new routes in the European air transport market in the period 2002–13 are examined. Data for 259 airports with more 250,000 annual passengers are used. The analysis reveals that low-cost airlines extended the benefits of air connectivity to regions with relatively low rates of gross domestic product per capita, increasing the geographical coverage of small or medium-sized airports. New routes…

  • Privatization and Universal Service Obligations

Germà Bel, Joan Calzada•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2009

Telecommunications, airlines, and postal services have similar economic features. However, they have followed different privatization patterns. While privatization of the universal service provider (USP) is common in telecommunications and airlines, it is by far less frequent in the postal sector. This paper analyzes how the size of the universal service obligation (USO) and the mechanisms traditionally used to finance it have prevented privatiza…

  • Network Competition and Entry Deterrence

    Open Access•Joan Calzada, Tommaso Valletti et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 17

We develop a model of logit demand that extends the traditional duopoly framework of network competition to a multi-firm industry. First, we show that incumbents establish the reciprocal access charge inefficiently below cost when they compete in prices but they behave efficiently if they compete in utilities. Secondly, we study how incumbents determine the industry-wide access charge under the threat of entry. We show that incumbents may accommo…
