    Open Access•Julian Gewirtz•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2020•Cited by: 1

This article examines how the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) interpreted HIV/AIDS in the period from 1984, when the Chinese government first introduced policies reacting to the disease's emergence, to 2000, when China's devastating epidemic began to receive worldwide media attention. Important new sources show how the CCP cast HIV/AIDS as a staging ground for debates about the risks of liberalization and an evolving metaphor for deviance from soci…

    Julian B Gewirtz, Julian Gewirtz•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2018•References: 1

Karl’s The Magic of Concepts is primarily a conceptual intervention in the historiography of modern China. Karl seeks to reframe scholarly understandings of capitalism and globalization in the twentieth-century Chinese context. She focuses in particular on two important periods that in her view witnessed repetitions of similar thematic debates about economic concepts and practices—the 1930s and the 1980s to 1990s. The guiding spirit in this study…

  • Unlikely Partners: Chinese Reformers, Western Economists, and the Making of Global China

    Julian Gewirtz•BOOK•Unlikely Partners•2017

Unlikely Partners recounts the story of how Chinese politicians and intellectuals looked beyond their country's borders for economic guidance at a key crossroads in the nation's tumultuous twentieth century. Julian Gewirtz offers a dramatic tale of competition for influence between reformers and hardline conservatives during the Deng Xiaoping era, bringing to light China's productive exchanges with the West. When Mao Zedong died in 1976, his succ…
