Developing Tendering Masculinities
This conceptual and spiritual autoethnographic essay proposes tendering masculinities as a framework for late-life formation that moves men from performance to presence and from control to communion. Drawing on Jungian alchemy (nigredo, albedo, rubedo) and the movements of decolonizing, queering, and befriending, the piece integrates fieldnotes with theological and depth-psychological reflection to articulate three interwoven practices for elderh…
Zones of Exception in Extractive Spaces
Oilfield worksites and the communities shaped by them are increasingly recognized as gendered spaces in which rotational labor, contractor hierarchies, and production imperatives can reshape norms of accountability and consent. This scoping review synthesizes conceptualizations of oilfield masculinities in scholarship on oil and gas extraction and examines their links to gendered harm, moral strain, and institutional accountability. Following PRI…
Motivations to Adopt
This study explored parental motivations to adopt and associations between motivations and family well-being. Multivariate OLS regression was used to examine responses from Young Adult Adoptee ( n = 206; average 24 years old) and Adoptive Parent ( n = 295) samples. When adoptees perceived that their parents were motivated by love for them, or helping a child in need, they reported higher levels of family functioning. Adoptive parents who endorsed…
Perceived sense of closeness and belonging for relative versus nonrelative adoptive families
Examining access to gender-affirming surgery
Objectives: To identify and explore the barriers and facilitators to accessing gender-affirming surgery (GAS) for transgender and gender-diverse individuals (TGDI) using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach. This study aims to assess the impact of structural, social, and systemic factors on the accessibility of GAS and to highlight key facilitators that improve healthcare access and overall well-being for TGDI individuals. Met…
Navigating Masculinities and Bullying
This phenomenological study explores how violence‐exposed adolescent boys construct masculinities and perceive the relationship between masculinity and bullying. Eight boys (ages 12–17, mean age = 14.1) from diverse racial, socioeconomic and sexual identity backgrounds were individually interviewed. Findings reveal the influence of violence exposure on boys' adherence to hegemonic masculinity and their reliance on aggression and dominance as prot…
Sexual and Gender Diverse Healthcare Navigation Model
Health care transitions, movements between providers or settings, can lead to poor outcomes, higher resource utilization, and even higher costs. Health care transitions can be complex experiences for sexual and gender diverse (SGD) individuals, especially when there is a need for ongoing health care (e.g. gender-affirming therapy, depression). Engaging new providers can lead to setbacks in trust requiring self-disclosure SGD-identities all over a…
Ageing among Black and non‐Hispanic White older adults
Older adults are living longer in the United States and the proportion of those belonging to minoritized groups is growing. The value and characteristics of quality of life (QoL) at an older age have becoming of central concern to policy makers. To investigate the wicked problem of ageing and QoL, we conducted and compared two group model building workshops in St. Louis City, one with 16 White and another with 10 Black American older adults, age …
Theories of Relational Health in Interpersonal Violence Research
Interpersonal violence is a pervasive public health problem that leads to emotional, behavioral, and physical health challenges. Theoretically, sound research examining protective factors, such as relational health, is imperative for developing effective interventions. However, the use of relational health theories in existing research needs to be better understood within the literature and should be further explored. Using scoping review methodo…
A Tale of Two Mentees
Academic mentorship is a vital step in preparing the next generation, yet little information exists on what successful mentorship looks like—particularly the process by which one ascertains a mentor, builds and maintains mentoring relationships, and achieves success in doctoral programs. Systems thinking is applied here to conceptualize academic mentorship within doctoral education as perceived by three doctoral students in social work programs a…
Mindfulness training for law enforcement to reduce occupational impact
Law enforcement officers are frequently subjected to highly stressful and traumatic situations with increased negative physical and mental health outcomes. Mindfulness is proposed as a means of improving self-reported physical or mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, burnout, and sleep disturbances. This meta-analysis aims to pool the results from studies evaluating mindfulness for police officers, providing an overall effect siz…
Psychological comorbidities and suicidality in sexual and gender minority foster youth
Understanding past experiences of suicidal ideation and behavior in the life narratives of transgender older adults
Transgender people (collectively referred to here as trans) experience disproportionate rates of suicidal ideation and behavior (plans and attempts) attributed to complex constellations of structural and individual factors. Interpretive methods in suicide research elucidate and contextualize intricate patterns of risk factors and strategies for recovery. The life narratives of trans older adults offer unique insights into past suicidal behavior a…
The poetics of soulful aging
Soulful aging is a process of adding meaning to each part of the aging process. In order to navigate the wilderness of soulful aging, this essay seeks wisdom from ancient and contemporary sages, poets, philosophers, and analysts- weaving modern practices of mindful living and meaning creation with age old and sanctified notions of attaining wisdom. The author provides three axis of contemplation and paradigms to engage with while navigating soulf…
Sexual and Gender Minority Youth in Foster Care
Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) are overrepresented in the foster care system and experience greater foster-care-related stressors than their non-SGM peers. These factors may further elevate their risk of anxiety/depressive, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-harm, and suicidality. The system currently produces unequal and disproportionate adverse mental health outcomes for SGMY and needs points of intervention to disrupt this status qu…
Disproportionate Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Perceived Social Support, Mental Health and Somatic Symptoms in Sexual and Gender Minority Populations
Deaths from COVID-19 continue to rise, and this virus has asymmetric impacts on marginalized communities though specific impacts on sexual and gender minority communities are not well understood. From March 23 to June 20, 2020, in an online cross-sectional survey among 1380 US adults, we assessed physical symptoms, psychological symptoms, rumination, and perceived social support in order to describe differences between sexual and gender minority …
