  • Neural mechanisms of face cue predictability and the integration of facial and acoustic cues in native- and nonnative-accented words

Open Access•Daphne Lei, Yuka Tatsumi et al.•ARTICLE•Brain and Language•2025•References: 44

This study examined the integration of face cue and native- and nonnative-accented English speech by manipulating the face cue predictability of a speaker's accent (predictable: one accent (American-accent or Chinese-accented), not predictable: two accents (American-accented and Chinese-accented). Monolingual listeners were first familiarized with each speaker's number and type of accent(s). Then, they completed an EEG-recorded auditory go/no-go …

  • Commemorative drama and Carnival

Tamara Underiner, Daphne P Lei et al.•CHAPTER•Theatre Histories•2024

This chapter considers commemorative drama and Carnival, including instances in which the commemorative and the carnivalesque are combined in the same occasion, from the second century in China through the sixteenth in Europe. It focuses primarily on religious observances that lend themselves to commemorative performances: the Jewish Purim shpil, the Islamic Ta’ziyeh, India’s Ramlila, and the many forms of Christian ritual and drama, designed to …

  • Novel Word Learning With Verbal Definitions and Images

    Open Access•Daphne Lei, Yushuang Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 60

We examined the impact of images on novel word learning and consolidation, in a conceptual replication of Liu and Van Hell (2020). After participants had learned one set of novel words with definitions and images on Day 1 (remote words) and a different set on Day 2 (recent words), they judged the semantic relatedness of word pairs on Days 2 and 8 while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. Day 2 ERPs showed that remote, but not recent, n…

  • Uncrossing the Borders

    Daphne P Lei, Daphne Lei•BOOK•Uncrossing the Borders•2019

Over many centuries, women on the Chinese stage committed suicide in beautiful and pathetic ways just before crossing the border for an interracial marriage. Uncrossing the Borders asks why this theatrical trope has remained so powerful and attractive. The book analyzes how national, cultural, and ethnic borders are inevitably gendered and incite violence against women in the name of the nation. The book surveys two millennia of historical, liter…

  • Applicability and attachment findings of the Strange Situation Paradigm in infants with visual impairment

Open Access•Andrea Urqueta Alfaro, Paul Meinz et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2019•References: 20

Attachment studies with diverse populations enrich the understanding of infants’ socioemotional development by documenting both universal and idiosyncratic aspects of attachment. Given the effects of attachment in children's socioemotional outcomes, such studies are necessary to investigate the impact of children's sensory impairments on attachment development. Yet, very little attachment research has focused on infants with visual impairment (VI…

  • The Production and Consumption of Chinese Theatre in Nineteenth-Century California

    Open Access•Daphne P Lei, Daphne Lei•ARTICLE•Theatre Research International•2003

The history of the earliest documented Chinese opera performances in California (1852) and their successors during the following decades reveal how Chinese theatre in the diaspora was produced and consumed by Chinese immigrants, European visitors and Americans. On the one hand, a familiar repertoire eased the nostalgia and reinforced the national consciousness of Chinese immigrants, while on the other, the ethnocentric reading and writing of Chin…
