  • Language and children's understanding of knowledge

    Open Access•Derek E Montgomery•ARTICLE•Mind & Language•2023

Research on children's theory of mind often restricts conceptually meaningful talk about knowledge to instances where know references a corresponding mental state. This article offers a reappraisal of that view. From a social‐pragmatic perspective, even nonreferential talk is meaningful when appropriately embedded in social routines. A synthesis of corpus data suggests children's early talk about knowledge routinely occurs in question–answer cont…

  • Mother‐child talk about mental states

    Open Access•Virginia Tompkins, Derek E Montgomery et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2021•References: 9

Research on parents’ mental state talk (MST) and children's social understanding is typically situated within a social constructivist approach, which asserts that parent‐child conversations around mental states promotes children's social understanding. However, prior research has provided a limited view of children's participation in these exchanges or the interaction among qualities of MST. This study examined 67 mothers’ MST while narrating a w…

  • The Meaning of Hope

    Open Access•Derek E Montgomery•ARTICLE•Human Development•2017

This paper analyzes how the verb hope acquires meaning in early childhood. It begins by critiquing the assumption that mental verbs derive meaning from corresponding referents. Meaning is instead constructed as children learn the conventions and practices that guide use of the word within discourse. Describing these conventions and practices illustrates that hope expresses desires and preferences about future, uncertain, and possible events. The …

  • Body Posture and Religious Attitudes

    Open Access•R C Fuller, Derek E Montgomery•ARTICLE•Archive for the Psychology of…•2015

One hundred and twenty-seven college students were recruited for an experimental investigation of the effect of body posture on religious attitudes. Roughly half of the participants were placed in lower, contractive body postures while the other half were placed in higher, expansive body postures. After five minutes in these postures, all were asked to fill out a measure of religious attitudes. As expected, participants in the lower, contractive …

  • Young children's understanding of interpretive diversity between different-age listeners

    Derek E Montgomery•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1993

Children's understanding of interpretive diversity was tested by assessing their attributions of knowledge to a mother and a preverbal baby, who both had access to an informative verbal message. In Experiment 1, most children between ages 4 and 8 overattributed knowledge to the preverbal baby after an informative message. Experiments la and 1b demonstrated that overattributions were not due to conflating the speaker's intent to inform with the in…

  • The Development and Validation of an Instrument to Assess an Optimal Afrocentric World View

    Open Access•Derek E Montgomery, Mark A Fine et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•1990•Cited by: 29•References: 20

An optimal Afrocentric belief system is characterized by a holistic, nonmaterialistic, and communal orientation in persons. An instrument to assess one's degree of adherence to an abstraction of this world view, the Belief Systems Analysis Scale (BSAS), was developed and psychometrically evaluated. To assess the instrument's construct validity, college students (66 females and 29 males) were administered the BSAS, the Dogmatism Scale, the Social …
