Challenges in Designing a Fully Autonomous Socially Assistive Robot for People with Parkinson’s Disease
Assistive robots are becoming an increasingly important application platform for research in robotics, AI, and HRI, as there is a pressing need to develop systems that support the elderly and people with disabilities, with a clear path to market. Yet, what remains unclear is whether current autonomous systems are already up to the task or whether additional HRI work is needed to make these systems acceptable and useful. In this article, we report…
Experienced facial masking indirectly compromises quality of life through stigmatization of women and men with Parkinson’s disease
This study examined the relationship between self-reported facial masking and quality of life (QoL) in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), and tested experienced stigma as a mediator and gender as a moderator of this relationship. The strength of stigma as a mediator was compared against an alternative mediator, depression. Ninety people with PD (34 women) rated difficulty showing facial expression (masking), and completed the Stigma Scale for …
Supporting Human Autonomy in a Robot-Assisted Medication Sorting Task
Stigma as a key determinant of health-related quality of life in Parkinson’s disease
Social interaction experiences of adults with Moebius Syndrome: A focus group
This focus group study explored the social interaction experiences and strategies of 12 adults with Moebius Syndrome, a rare congenital condition characterized by facial paralysis. Content analysis revealed five themes of social functioning: social engagement/disengagement; resilience/sensitivity; social support/stigma; being understood/misunderstood; and public awareness/lack of awareness of Moebius Syndrome. Participants used compensatory expre…
Culture, gender and health care stigma: Practitioners’ response to facial masking experienced by people with Parkinson’s disease
Practitioners' impressions of patients with Parkinson's disease: The Social Ecology of the Expressive Mask
The Nature of Rapport and Its Nonverbal Correlates
The purpose of this article is to offer a conceptualization of rapport that has utility for identifying the nonverbal correlates associated with rapport. We describe the nature of rapport in terms of a dynamic structure of three interrelating components: mutual attentiveness, positivity, and coordination. We propose that the relative weighting of these components in the experience of rapport changes over the course of a developing relationship bet…
