  • Grassroots lobbying in Germany

    Open Access•Maciej Olejnik•ARTICLE•Parliamentary Affairs•2025•References: 22

This paper investigates the effectiveness of a grassroots lobbying technique—public petitions—in Germany, applying the costly signaling theory and the economic theory of political information. I analyzed public petitions with at least 1,000 signatures, addressed by the Bundestag during its 19th term (2017–2021), and assessed the petitions’ issue salience for the ruling parties, CDU/CSU and SPD. The findings reveal that public petitions can be an …

  • When is grassroots lobbying effective? The case of the e-petitions at the national level in the UK

    Open Access•Maciej Olejnik•ARTICLE•Interest Groups & Advocacy•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 29

The article examines the effectiveness of one technique of grassroots lobbying (e-petitions) in the UK through the prism of: (1) the claim that the goal of lobbying activity (the change versus protection of the status quo policy) is a great predictor of lobbying’s outcome; (2) the signalling theory; (3) the amended version of the economic theory of political information. In the paper, I studied the petitions signed by at least 10,000 citizens sub…

  • The Effectiveness of Grassroots Lobbying at the Regional Level in Poland

    Open Access•Maciej Olejnik•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2021•Cited by: 3

This article examines the effectiveness of grassroots lobbying at the regional level in Poland. For the purpose of the article, “loyalty to the citizens versus party theory” was formulated. It distinguishes two stages of the policy-making process within which the councilors react differently to grassroots lobbying. The first stage refers to the preparation of the law by the region’s board. The theory assumes that the more people pressure the legi…

  • Threatening or Benevolent Hegemon

Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski, Maciej Olejnik•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2020•Cited by: 1

In the political science literature, we can find various approaches to Germany's "alleged" hegemony. In the article we examine the images of Germany among the Polish political parties between 2014 and 2017 to better understand their different attitudes toward Germany in the context of Polish foreign policy. We distinguish four types of images of Germany: benevolent hegemon, malicious hegemon, tamed hegemon, and non-hegemon. The left and center pa…
