  • Re-interpreting Elián González: The Puzzles of the Cultural Complex

Johann Graaff, Johann Frederick De Villiers Graaff•ARTICLE•Jung Journal•2018

This article has two parts. The first part compares two Jungian interpretations of the Elián González affair in 1999 in which a family custody battle metastasized into a Cuba-U.S. international event. One interpretation is brief, simple, and integrated, and revolves around a single complex. The other interpretation, building forward on the first, is longer, complicated, fragmentary, and evokes multiple complexes. The second part of the paper pose…

  • Encountering the Alien: Gadamer and transformation in pedagogy

    Johann Graaff•ARTICLE•Educational Philosophy and Theory•2007•References: 3

For Gadamer, understanding moves between two different levels. One is the everyday ontological level in which there is a meeting between the familiar and the alien, between the known and the not‐quite‐expected. But understanding can also be a skill to be developed. This is the way in which we achieve good knowledge. In pedagogical terms, encountering the alien is the basis for self‐formation, or bildung, originating in Hegel. But there is an ambi…

  • The seductions of determinism in development theory: Foucault's functionalism

    Johann Graaff•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 15

In 1985 David Booth wrote a seminal article in which he argued that development theory, mostly Marxist but also modernisation theory, was out of touch with reality, incapable of generating viable policy, and riven with meta-theoretical errors. He recommended a return to empirical case studies, the comparative method, and an awareness of the problems of functionalist and essentialist argument. In the ensuing decade a further range of solutions was…

  • South African Explanations of Political Violence 1980-1995

    Johann Graaff•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Philosophy•2001•References: 3

During the 1980's and the early 1990's South Africa experienced disturbing political violence of an unprecedented scope, intensity and nature. It was disturbing because it entailed acts of horrifying brutality, notably the ‘necklace' and the massacre, all of this against the background of ‘civilized' and measured com promise and negotiation. It stubbornly continued despite the unbanning of the liberation political organisations, and the holding o…
