  • What is European criminology actually about? Evolution from 2021 to 2023

    Open Access•Josep-Maria Tamarit-Sumalla, Núria Franco-Guillén et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2025

This study examines the evolution of European criminology from 2021 to 2023. It aimed to determine if there have been any changes in the topics that researchers are interested in and how these topics have evolved. These interests might be affected by societal changes, which could influence their ability to address societal problems. A topic modelling methodology was used to analyse the abstracts presented at the annual ESC conferences from 2001 t…

  • Leaving Europe, leaving Spain: Comparing secessionism from and within the European Union

    Marc Sanjaume‐calvet, Daniel Cetrà et al.•ARTICLE•West European Politics•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 26

Are secessionisms from and within the EU comparable? What motivates them and to what extent do they pose similar challenges to EU territorial governance? This article addresses these questions by comparing the framing of the British Leave campaign and the Catalan independence movement. Drawing on the FraTerr database and method, the analysis suggests that secessionism from the EU and secessionism within the EU are different political phenomena de…

  • Big Data Analysis

Open Access•Núria Franco-Guillén, Sebastian De Laile et al.•CHAPTER•Research Methods in Deliberative…•2022

This chapter defines big data and sets out methodological decisions to be made in big data analysis. It offers ways of researching millions of instances of ‘everyday talk’ in the public sphere, on a scale that is impossible using other methods, and thus especially useful for deliberative systems research. The chapter discusses some of the challenges in data gathering, sources, data cleaning, and tool selection and contextualize these challenges i…

  • Narratives of the Process: Parliamentary debates about Catalonia's referendum of 2017

    Open Access•Núria Franco-Guillén, Núria Franco‐Guillén et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Ethnicity and…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 24

On 1 October 2017, Catalonia held an independence referendum. The Spanish state had previously declared this referendum illegal and activated political and security devices to prevent it from being held. The referendum was the tipping point of the so‐called Catalan ‘Process’, which would continue with the suspension of Catalonia's self‐government and the imprisonment of several Catalan politicians and activists. Heated political discussion has ce…

  • Mapping Deliberative Systems with Big Data: The Case of the Scottish Independence Referendum

    Open Access•John Parkinson, Sebastian De Laile et al.•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2022•Cited by: 10•References: 52

Deliberative systems theorists have for some time emphasised the distributed nature of deliberative values; they therefore do not focus exclusively on ‘deliberation’ but on all sorts of communication that advance deliberative democratic values, including everyday political talk in informal settings. However, such talk has been impossible to capture inductively at scale. This article discusses an electronic approach, Structural Topic Modelling, an…

  • Did Australia listen to Indigenous people on constitutional recognition? A big data analysis

    Open Access•John Parkinson, Núria Franco-Guillén et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 31

This paper uses novel electronic tools to identify the degree to which Australia was listening to Indigenous peoples in a ‘national conversation’ about constitutional recognition between 2015 and late 2017. The results show that while there was a superficial overlap in themes, there were important differences of framing. Recognition remained a largely formal, elite and non-Indigenous concern, with First Nations focusing on treaties, sovereignty, …

  • When in parliamentary debate there is no debate: Argumentation strategies during Catalonia’s 2017 referendum

    Open Access•Gema Rubio‐carbonero, Núria Franco-Guillén•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Politics•2022•References: 31

On the 1st October 2017 an independence referendum was organised in Catalonia. The aim of this paper is to analyse the nature of the political debate going on in the Catalan Parliament during the whole process by focusing on the kind of argumentation strategies that were used by each of the leanings to legitimise their political decisions. We do that relying on a methodological distinction that differentiates between sound argumentation and falla…

  • Justifying Secession in Catalonia: Resolving Grievances or a Means to a Better Future

    Open Access•Anwen Elias, Núria Franco-Guillén•ARTICLE•Politics and Governance•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 23

This article advances understandings of secessionist strategies by examining how and why secessionist movements make the case for creating a new sovereign state. It draws on new empirical data to examine the ways in which pro-independence parties in Catalonia have justified their calls for the creation of an independent Catalan Republic between 2008 and 2018. The findings challenge the widespread scholarly assumption that secessionist mobilisatio…

    Open Access•Anwen Elias, Linda Basile et al.•ARTICLE•Regional & Federal Studies•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 15

This article introduces a new dataset on regionalist actors’ territorial demands and frames in Europe. The FraTerr dataset advances on existing datasets by proposing a more fine-grained understanding of regionalist actors’ territorial demands, and is the first to provide comparative data on how these are framed. Methodologically, it develops an original coding scheme for the qualitative content analysis of political documents. Empirically, this a…

    Open Access•Núria Franco-Guillén•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•2019

Since Urwin and Rokkan’s seminal publication on peripheries in 1983, we have witnessed an increasing number of academic works that examine sub-state political movements from a variety of perspectives. This scholarship has contributed to a greater understanding of the mobilization of territorial interests, mostly (but not only) in Western democracies, and for good reasons. Contrary to the prediction of several scholars and political commentators o…

This paper examines stateless nationalist and regionalist party (SNRP) discourses on immigration through an exploration of the economic dimensions of the centre-periphery cleavage. Using qualitative document analysis, the Republican Left in Catalonia (ERC) and the Scottish National Party (SNP) in Scotland are studied in order to see whether and how the relative economic position of a region shapes SNRP discourses on immigration. The period of ana…

Contact theory and threat group theory offer contradictory hypothesis regarding the effect of contact with immigrants. Does contact reduce or increases negative attitudes towards immigration? This article integrates both approaches and tests the effect of contact towards immigrants when different contexts are considered. We investigate the effect of the economic environment and the immigrant group size on modifying attitudes towards immigration i…
