Bildungspolitik in Deutschland: Eine Einführung

Migration, Ethnic Conflicts, and Racism
Migration refers to a process of people shifting across borders. Recently, sociology has discussed migration as a core element of globalization. Some theorists have gone so far as to label the twentieth century the “Age of Migration,” offering the following reasons for doing so: The number of countries and of people now involved in migratory processes is higher than at any previous time in history; the present migration movement is different in c…
Health and Race
Race interacts with health just as it does with other life‐determining, sociodemographic factors like class, gender, and age. Race is best understood as a shared set of cultural and social experiences common to people of the same skin color. Research has shown that the notion of distinct biological races is misleading because often more genetic variation exists within a defined “race” than between them. Race is a social construction rather than a…

Citizenship and Belonging: An Analysis of Immigrants’ Integration Beliefs and Membership Meaning in South-West Germany
Germany has the highest number of immigrants in Europe. Changes in immigration and citizenship laws have intended to make Germany an attractive destination for skilled immigrant workers. The accentuated focus on the economic efficiency of migration, however, leaves open the question of how Germany’s national identity is living up to the immigrant situation. Based on face-to-face, in-depth, semi-structured interviews (N=45), this question is probe…
Exorbitant Privilege: The Rise and Fall of the Dollar
It was Richard Nixon who, if I remember correctly, quite to the point once said: “the dollar is our currency, but your problem.” Already from the mid-1920s the US dollar has not been just America’s

Perennial Anti-Americanism in Germany? Critical comments on Ruth Hatlapa’s and Andrei S. Markovits’ “Obamamania and Anti-Americanism as Complementary Concepts”
The transatlantic fallout preceding and immediately following the opening of the Second Iraq War in 2003 was accompanied by an unusually widespread public contempt for U.S. President George W. Bush. No doubt, vast majorities in Germany (and in many other European countries) rejected the Iraq invasion. But how should we interpret their motives? Was criticism levelled against a specific policy or was it based on negative stereotyping of America? Th…
