Migration refers to a process of people shifting across borders. Recently, sociology has discussed migration as a core element of globalization. Some theorists have gone so far as to label the twentieth century the “Age of Migration,” offering the following reasons for doing so: The number of countries and of people now involved in migratory processes is higher than at any previous time in history; the present migration movement is different in character from earlier forms of migration; and migration flows have become more heterogeneous in composition and more globally significant because of the improvement in travel and communication facilities. But migration is also an old phenomenon: People have been migrating since the dawn of human history
