Career Development of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals
This chapter highlights findings from the range of scholarly contributions that have informed understanding and practice of career development and career counseling with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people. It brings together theoretical and empirical work with practical recommendations to enable career professionals to work more effectively with sexual minority clients. The earliest publication to examine a theory of person–env…
Patterns of Career and Identity Interference for Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Young Adults
Researchers have hypothesized about the potentially competing demands of sexual identity development and career development (e.g., Chen, Stracuzzi, & Ruckdeschel, 2004; Fassinger, 1996; Morrow, 1997; Schmidt, 2004). In the present study, we explored these hypotheses focusing specifically on career decision making. Using cluster analysis, we identified three groups of lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults who differed in terms of the conflict ex…

Central variables of social cognitive theory were adapted to forge an integrative model of well-being, which was designed to offer greater utility for therapeutic and self-directed change efforts than the dominant personality view of well-being. The authors present 2 studies using versions of the social cognitive model to predict domain-specific and overall life satisfaction. In both studies-one nomothetic, the other idiographic in measurement ap…
Social Cognitive Predictors of Academic Interests and Goals in Engineering
This study examined the utility of social cognitive career theory (SCCT; R. W. Lent, S. D. Brown, & G. Hackett, 1994) in predicting engineering interests and major choice goals among women and men and among students at historically Black and predominantly White universities. Participants (487 students in introductory engineering courses at 3 universities) completed measures of academic interests, goals, self-efficacy, outcome expectations, and en…
A qualitative study of adaptation experiences of 1.5-generation Asian Americans
Adaptation experiences of 1.5-generation Asian American college students (N = 10) were examined using the consensual qualitative research method. Results indicated 4 domains of adaptation experiences: preimmigration experiences, acculturation and enculturation experiences, intercultural relationships, and support systems. Participants reported that English proficiency played a significant role in their initial adjustment. Currently, most of the p…
