    Open Access•Ildikó Lehtinen•ARTICLE•Keel ja Kirjandus•2026

The objective of this article is to examine Ilmari Manninen’s position within Finnish ethnology on the basis of archival sources. The material consists mainly of Manninen’s correspondence, and the methodological approach is a close re-reading of his scholarly work. Manninen spent six years in Estonia, where he adapted well to the university and museum life in Tartu. The opening of the Estonian National Museum was a milestone and a testament to th…

In this article, I analyze teacher’s attire as a political phenomenon in the context of the Mari people, a Finno-Ugric minority living in Central Russia. The material for this study is based on observations and interviews made by the author during 1987‒2019 in different places of the Mari region. The Mari teacher’s dress code, a dark dress with a white collar, is usually considered self-evident, but as I argue in this article, in the Soviet Union…

    Ildikó Lehtinen•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2016

The focus of this study is the concept of cleanliness among the Mari, a people speaking a Finno-Ugrian language living in the Volga region of Russia. I personally had a chance to carry out ethnological expeditions in the Mari Republic and in the Mari villages of the Bashkir, Tatar and Udmurtian Republics, and the Kirov and Perm regions from 1981 until recently. In this article, I discuss the concept of hygiene among Mari women and the changes it …
